Selling a car with issues
I've made a couple of threads about this car before, it's a 2002 saab 93 2.2 turbo diesel. My brother bought it and straight away it had
issues, it would take a couple of minutes to start and then start with a big cloud of smoke. Cylinder head was taken off as old glow plugs had seized
and sheared off. New glow plugs fixed the slow starting but there are still problems, it's leaking coolant (very slow rate, looks like from the
back of the block, i followed the cylinder head off and new head gasket fitting by the book, didn't use an OEM gasket though, maybe that's
the issue?) and it smokes on startup for a couple of mins until warm. It was plugged in at the local garage to their diagnostics and error code was
MAF related which I've replaced and engine warning light is no longer showing. As my dad was following me back from it's recent MOT he
said it was smoking when hard accelerating, I couldn't see it when in the rear view mirror but it was apparently. There's so many things
it could be, turbo, head gasket, cracked pipes, sensors, I've not got the time or knowledge to sort it
Problems aside, it did pass MOT and now has 12 months ticket. I'm after advice on what to do about getting it sold. Would you sell it as is? or
go about getting it fixed (then I have to weigh up cost of repairs very how much the repairs would add to the selling price) Totally fed up with this
car, just want to get it shifted, thanks for any advice

Just sell as is but be upfront with the problems. spares or repairs but has 12months Mot ect

Just be truthful, and no need to go into full details, just say leaking a little fluid and poor starting etc.
or have you thought about trading it in as most big garages dont check running of the car just the condition.

thanks for the replies. in retrospect part exchanging it would have been the best bet but too late for that now as my brother already has a
replacement car oh and the numberplate ends in a O not a D but nice idea

Well last time I sold a volvo 940 I pretty much wrote an essay covering all the little niggles, I truly wouldn't be able to sleep if I diddled

I dont knoew many large engine diesels that dont smoke on hard accel. So wouldnt worry about that.
When starting the car, are you allowing the heaterplug warning light to go out before turning over?

Do the same again then.
It's the best way.
Maybe also insist that if you ebay it, all bidders must view before bidding.
I've had hassle in the past from someone who didn't seem to be able to read the advert and gave me untold grief.

to me, it sounds like you think its worse than it is - a small leak and smoking on acceleration is par for the course to me. Now my sprinter, thats
got a list of BIG problems! Ive had the exact same dilema about how to sell it. Heres the faults:
Jumps out of 1st gear
Goes into safe mode after a few seconds of full throttle
Split intercooler (this was after the safe mode issue so not the cause)
Back door jammed one side, no lock the other
Side door dicky
Rust everywhere
Mould everywhere
Ignition in pieces, transponder hidden under dash
Radio broke
Handbrake dodgy
Intermittant back light cluster fault
Did have most of the exhaust missing, til i fixed it....
Can you believe it has a genuine nearly full MOT?!
So smile, that list makes yours sound mint!

Yeah I am, although now that it's warming up after winter it's not coming on unless it's a very cold morning.

I wish the guy who sold me my Vectra had your scruples. I have spent about £300 Putting it right so far. Sold as showroom condition on e bay. My arse!

Sounds like the only real problem is the slight water leak.
Take pics, stick it on ebay, be honest and put a reasonable minimum on it (you want it gone but not for a tenner!)

there's a few of these you can buy that claim to be long term fixes, never tried them myself though
autosave had this one, which reading it claimed to last the life of the car -

All those products are great except they can cause other things like blocked heater matrix's. I used it on a fiesta once with a leaky rad, it
cured the rad but couldn't get any hot air from the heater. I've used K seal alot when i worked at the AA, it works quite well but
definatly not long term.
How much do you want for the saab as it is, could be interested.
