Duh !
May be a useful warning.
Yesterday with kit car on trailer ( Ford key ) behind Focus tow car (Ford key ) I automatically tried to unlock the Focus which already had its keys
in the ignition. The kit car key locked the Focus but wouldn't unlock it again. Cellphone, money, house keys, wife's bag, keys and phone
locked in the Focus. Suddenly stripped of all modern essentials and 5p in my pocket 
Haynes Ford agents nearby were very helpful and loaned me a phone to call AA who came within 20 minutes and opened the Focus.
The point is - AA man said ANY Ford key will lock any Ford car but of course will not unlock again. So those of us with Sierra steering columns
and with Ford tin tops should be careful.
I'm addicted to brake fluid, but I can stop anytime.

thanks for the info
I am sure that must be a case of poor luck, otherwise chaos would ensue every saturday at the supermarket as people were busy locking all the fords in
the vicinity.
Perhaps it is a particular set of circumstances, have you tried to repeat the exercise (with the drivers window open!)?

It's not a problem, as long as you have the Tintop keys in your posession, not inside the car.

Oh see what you mean. This would not apply to electronic heys - mine is manual.

My old 93 ford Orion key used to be able open my mates fiesta's boot.
I used to play tricks on him cos he was stupid enough to leave a spare key in the glovebox along with his logbook and other details.
I unlocked the boot, climbed through and used the key to move the car out of sight,so he thought it had been nicked.
He soon removed the key and logbook when I pointed out how stupid it was to have them in the car in the first place.
lesson learned

My donor Sierra keys would open my Dad's Granada fuel cap, but not the rest of the car! lol
Saved me paying for petrol for years!

The "lock any Ford" applies to all tibi type keys. They're the thin, roughly cylindrical ones as opposed to flat blade shaped
earlier and later ones.

Half a tennis ball and a rubber mallet apparently unlocks most fords.
Track days ARE the best thing since sliced bread, until I get a supercharger that is!
