4x4 L/R 90,110 or Discovery
Hi all,
I am after some advice about a suitable 4x4.
My sister is a wildlife photographer and currently has a series 3 Land Rover and wants to upgrade it, what would you guys that are into 4x4's
recomend a Land Rover 90/110 or a Discovery, and what problems should I look out for when viewing vehicles for sale. She needs to be able to get all
her camera equipment in and obviously needs to get to some fairly remote off road locations around the country, so also needs to do a fair bit of road
driving, off road driving would not be too extreme.
Any advice will be appreciated.

Much as I love the Defender I reckon a Discovery 300Tdi would suit her better..
Far, far cheaper than a 90 or 110 and infinitely more comfortable.
Corrosion is your biggest concern, boot floor, sills and rear arches just inside the rear doors.

NigeEss Thanks for the quick response, that was what I was thinking but didn't know about the rust problem, that will be a great help when
trying to source her a suitable vehicle.

LR90s are no good for long miles, Discos are ok
A Vitara TD with all terrain tyres will be far better on road, and deal with most off road situations.
Vitara doesnt attract the silly road tax @£435 and in DDi form will give 30mpg, and wont breakdown.
I used to be hung up on how good land Rovers were till I drove other stuff.

£4k would get her into a TD5 Disco, these dont suffer from the rust issue like the earlier 200 and 300's. Yes they have niggles and problems,
all landrovers do, but we love our TD5 (2002 ES premium 7 seater). It will do nearly 30mpg on a motorway at sensible speed, but only returns low
20's around the roads and lanes, and thats with the missus driving. The td5 sounds great, and for such a big car its surprisingly nippy. Its
mega comfy and brilliant for the family and all the kit, 3 kids across the back seat even with 2 car seats and they are not squashed, and when they
start fighting we can chuck them in the 3rd row of eats at the back to split them up. The rear air suspension and ACE (active ride control thingy) do
have known issues, but we have it on ours and although i have had to replace the air spring (only £80 and very simple and quick to change) i
wouldn't consider one without it as it really does improve the handling and comfort.
Like most LR, buy on condition and service record, not mileage.

I'm with NigeEss. 300TDi Discovery should fit the bill. DON'T get an automatic though, they are a real PITA!! Too many sensors and
electronics for what is essentially a truck. (If you want to know why I say that, just search my previous threads for Discovery issues )
Definitely rust is the main killer, I've just spent about a week of evenings replacing and patching the sills on our Disco. The engines will go
for ever if maintained and pull like a train.
