Getting a car off SORN

I have a car that is currently SORN'd, not insured, taxed or MOT'd.

I'm trying to work out how to get it back on the road. I doubt it'll pass an MOT first time around, so it'll need a couple of trips around the place to get work done / tests etc.

Can I just:-

  1. Insure it
  2. Take it for MOT
  3. Tax it

The assumption is, I'd be collecting it from where it is stored on a trailer. But once it's home, I'd have to keep it garaged until I can get it MOT'd and taxed, which is going to mean putting the Indy into storage. Why can't I have a house with a 4 car garage!!

Cheers

Mike

Yep insure it. Then covered for the trip to the MOT and back. Then tax it, you'll need to take your MOT, V5 and insurance cert with you..

When I took a bike off sorn a few weeks ago I didnt even need any forms (its a V something or other) at the PO.

Make sure it's booked in for the MOT before going. If you get pulled, they'll phone the test station to check.

You can tax it online when on a SORN but NOT before the 1st day of the month in which you want it to start, Pain in the arse really as I wanted to take the car out on the 1st. (took it out anyway, working on the theory if stopped it would show up on the system as taxed then hopefully bluff my way out.)

Can you drive it untaxed to a MOT testing station, wouldn't have thought so, you can drive it there without the MOT but I wouldn't think you could drive without tax. I suspect to stay strictly on the right side of the law you'd have to trailer it.

Yep, you can.

You can't tax it until it's MOTd and it'd be pretty unreasonable to suggest people would have to trailer cars, especially when they've taken the license category off us to allow you to tow enough weight to get a tin top to MOT.
