MK4 Golf 1.6 petrol - dead gearbox/clutch?

Sister's MK4 Golf 1.6 petrol has just decided to destroy it's gearbox. Her local mechanic has inspected it and confirmed that something has failed internally in the gear box rendering it dead and the clutc is covered in oil.

V reg, 130k miles, but very very clean and tidy (brother-in-law is a car cleaning freak).

They've already bought another car and have decided to eBay the Golf as spares/repair.

Looking around it seems you can pick up a 2nd hand g/box (DUU?) for ~£250 and a clutch kit for ~£80. Is it likely to need anything else other than the clutch and box and some new fluids?

I'm guessing it's the same gearbox in the 1.6 Audi A4? In which case the gearboxes are know to fail. IIRC, the bolts work loos in the diff and munch through the casing into the bellhousing. Finding a gearbox took some doing for the one I had to fix and then the one I bought had the same problem be was caught and modified before the refit!

Also, the flywheel is riveted to the end of the crank, and have been known to come adrift... (my daughter used to have a Mk4 GTi, and I found out all of the common issues with them - it wasn't VW's greatest Golf... )

Yeah, I've got an early one at R reg & the rivets holding the crownwheel to the diff is a known failure. But looking into it the opinion on various forums etc was that it was sorted within a couple of years & if they're gonna go at all they'll have done it long since & be right now, suppose they've just been unlucky!
I dont know that it's worth fixing to be honest, mabye more to be made by breaking it. Spending £300+ on bits plus your time does seem a fair bit for the age & type of car. But it being old enough to be in "ordinary" scappys due to MOT failures, other mechanical failures etc (I got mine cheap cos the head gasket was gone) you may be able to get a box much cheaper that way, like less than £100 & mabye get the clutch too if you find one with plenty wear left on it!
Although it a decent enough car I dont rate mine all that much really, it's not great on fuel & is pretty gutless at 100bhp in a heavy car, my brother's 306td can leave it for dead!

If you do go to the scrappy for one, try to find out why the car has been scrapped, you dont want to find out it's because the box is the same as yours!

Don't see why not if it's otherwise in cracking condition. Sometimes I wonder why people would spend £500 on another car with an unknown list of faults and history rather than spend £300 fixing their current good one

They've just spent £6k on a 55 plate Passat estate, which they were going to buy anyway. The gearbox failure on the Golf just means they get less back for it than planned

Thanks for the info chaps. Speaking to bro in law he confirmed it was a stary rivet from the crown wheel that caused the failure, but he'll feel better knowing it's a common issue!

The rest of the car really is in A1 condition, with immaculate alloys, good tyres, FSH and cleaned to death - fixed up it would make a decent commuter or first car for someone. Seems a real shame to scrap what is 80% good for the sake of a bit of effort.
