HID bulbs for OEM

Anybody here and expert on HID bulbs?

From what I can work out there are two systems and two voltages, and each type of bulb comes in 'S' or 'R'....

D1 - 85v, integrated ignitor
D2 - 85v, external ignitor
D3 - 42v, integrated ignitor
D4 - 42v, external ignitor

Again, from what I've read, it seems that D3 is an updated version of D1 using less mercury, and the same for D4 to D2.

One site I read seemed to suggest that if you have a D1 system you can 'upgrade' to a D3 by changing the ballast, therefore changing the voltage, which would suggest that D1 and D3 have the same physical shape.

Now, the above is what I've managed to asscertain from the limited information on the net. If anyone sees any glaring errors in the above please say now as my questions below will be automatically wrong!

So here's what I'm actually trying to work out:

I have a D2 system in the Audi right now. I want to put the facelift headlights on the car which take D3 bulb. I can't change the ballast as my lighting controller can't talk to the D3 ballast, and if I upgrade that too the side repeaters will stop working as the facelift car has them in the mirrors rather than the wings.

But, my existing D2 ballast is 85v like a D1 bulb, which by the sound of it will physically fit in a D3 housing. I've got a spare D3 ignitor here and I found a pic on the 'net of a D1 ignitor and the electrical connection looks the same.

So here's the question: will a D3 headlight work in my D2 car if I use a D1 bulb (with integrated ignitor) in place of the D3?

Hope that all makes sense. Any comments?

(Also, anybody got any spare HID bits laying around - working or not - that they're willing to part with in the name of research? )

I'm not sure MOT guys know much about HID...

As far as I'm concerned if it fits and is the right voltage then why not... But then aren't the bulbs something silly like £80 each?
