Maybe it's not ignition related, might be worth doing a compression check on all cylinders.

I had a Rangie classic several years ago and mine was the same up until it eventualy wounldn't run. It would start then cut out. I changed
everything dizzy cap, rotor arm, ECU, air flow meter, plugs, leads coil. The list was endless.
It turned out to be a blocked flame trap which cost 5 quid odd and sorted it out.

3.5 or 3.9+ Litres, (and confirm its a Rover V8)
Check the compression on all 8 pots. Could be a blown head gasket. (common on the 3.9's and above)
weak sparks on the RV8 is always a problem, I changed mine to a Mallory electronic Dizzy.
Is it using water? Especially if a 3.9 or above.

Are you absolutely, positively sure you've definitely got all the spark leads connected to the right plugs? If you've got two swapped
it'll run like a dog on 6.

Rotor arm on mine did this
You'd be surprised how quickly the sales people at B&Q try and assist you after ignoring you for the past 15 minutes when you try and start a

Rotor arm here as well, I had one that just stopped. You need a decent quality one !

Faulty plug? I had an intermittent and progressively worse misfire on a 4 cyl which was worse when hot and worse on tip-in. It was a resistor plug
with a dodgy internal connection. Measure the resistance through the plugs from one end to the other (not to the ground/body) - it should be around
3-5Kohms (resistor) or less (non-resistor) if it's OK. This one was 9K and was breaking down on spark, later became 27K and was giving an almost
constant misfire other than at cruise.

Worn cam shaft will cause all sorts of running problems on the Rover lump especially if exhaust lobes are worn. Try running the engine with one rocker
cover off at a time and check all valves are opening. Compressions can still be good although lower if an inlet lobe is worn,

I had a rover v8 many years ago and it ran rough all the time untill I stopped at a filling station for juice and the fitter who worked there was
serving the fuel (it was that long ago).
I moaned about the car as he was filling it up, he said wait there a mo, came out with an oil can and squirted some oil into the the SU dash pots!!!!
The car was transformed.
Can't say thats your trouble but worth a try
Happy new year.....Denis.
Where did that go?

Have you changed plugs or just checked them ?
They often perform very differently when under load, as mentioned above resistor
plugs can fail. My ZX9r developed a misfire but all pugs fired fine when checked but
a new set cured the problem.

Landrover 101 - Rover v8 3.5 l on Carbs Original Military re-con. (pale blue)
Dizzy contents changes to "electronic kit" (powerspark)
Coil Changed
Leads Changed
Rotar Changed
Cap Changed
Link Bar on back of Carbs replaced
Not using water
Havn#t compression checked it - don't have gear to do that
Haven't changed plugs just re-set them all
Has never ran right since the day it started backing and missing. Before all the ignition bits were changed.

I'd urge you to at least check the plugs. i considered a complete replacement of all coils and leads on the aforementioned car as I felt the
plugs wouldn't be at fault. A £10 set of copper plugs later and the car was transformed from a misfiring nightmare back to its normal self.

Change the plugs first.
Start with the simple things first...
If yer not sure ask someone that does....
Which carbs have ye fitted to it??
If its Strombergs, throw them in the bin and fit SU's...
I would recommend fitting a genuine cap, theres alot of crap copies out there...
I had the same symptoms in my V8 trialler, changed the carbs and fitted Lumination..
Bertie.
P.s, I take it you've checked/changed the fuel filter??

With all other ignition bits working at best it your plugs are the weakest link, any deficencies with be exagerated.
Just because they look to fire properly when they're dangling on the leads doesn't mean they work as well in situ.
Just change them and if nothing else it eliminates another variable.
