Carbon, kevlar,??????
I've been thinking about making a sump guard for the kitten from Kevlar as I need strength, but it needs to be light and wondered if Kevlar is
formed/laid up like or similar to fibreglass. I've done quite a bit with fibreglass (very DIY) like my odd looking front spoiler and all the
other bodywork so just wondered if Kevlar is an option. I fancy making the kitten lighter over the next few years so may invest in a bit of training
from (carbonman) if I ever get time. If Kevlar is an option where's the best place to purchase materials. Cheers.

Unless you really need "anti pierce" protection like say for a rally car you don't really need Kevlar in there. An Aramid cloth of
some sort is certainly the way to go. A composite of Diolen, E- Glass and a "core material" such as Soric or Closed Cell Foam would work
and could be wet laid like GRP.

Ok, well I did ask. As you say I don't need "anti pierce" protection so your suggestion's sound good. I don't really
want to have to add weight with box section to fix to the car so as long as its strong enough to protect the sump where do I get the parts from. I can
make a simple mould. It would need to be about 700mm x 800mm or so. Can you supply the parts Warren?

You can get the materials from Easy Composites (sister company to Carbon Mods) online. If you want some advice on the lay-up drop me a line.

You could also try http://www.ecfibreglasssupplies.co.uk/ they sell carbon, kevlar and diolen.
I think for diolen its the same layup as fibreglass with polyester resin, for kevlar you need an epoxy resin. It can be done the same way as
fibreglass but I think you get better results with vacuum bagging.

Ordered it all from easy composites today, he's talked me through it and think I will be using 2x Kevlar, glass, core, glass, 2x Kevlar and
epoxy wet lay. Got it all scribbled down somewhere. I would like to bag it, but think I can weigh the last layer down as easy composites suggested
(sending me some plastic) and can probably clamp it all also. He did say it would be strong.
Aramid Cloth Fabric 2/2 Twill Weave 300g 1m Wide 3
Biaxial Glass Cloth 440g 1.27m Wide 1
EL2 Epoxy Laminating Resin 1kg FAST 2
EasyCell75 Closed Cell PVC Foam 3mm 1020mm x 1090mm [OS1] 1
Cheers for all the help.

Top man, I may take you up on that offer along with some training, when I get half a chance. I've always liked making, mending, adapting things
and find fiberglass and the like very interesting. Cheers Andrew.
