Garage Insurance.

Hello

I own a house which I currently rent out. The house has a detached garage which under the tenancy agreement i am allowed to use for my own purposes of keeping my car and tools in.

It has come to the point I would like to insure what i have in there (power and hand tools etc).

I have buildings insurance on the house and the first logical step is for me to check to see if my current house insurance provider will allow me to add it on.

If not... does any one have any experience with insuring a garage and its contents. I assume its quite common as some people do not keep their cars at home and rent lock ups etc.

Thanks

Ash

I had a lockup, insurance was extortionate so took the risk..... As it turned out unwisely as my tools were nicked

As you own the house and garage it should be covered under this policy, I have not seen any 'you must be living in the house' clauses, if this was so then those that own second houses would be stuffed.

I am sure that it does ask on the insurance quotes is the property let out
and if so, trying to insure the contents of the garage only would seem a bit odd (to me)

Ive just checked my house insurance, and it does state that the property is not let, or sub let, and yours is

Most of my house insurance policies I've had require me to live in the house, and not be out of the country or on holiday for more than something like 8 weeks.

The policies I've had for other houses are specifically for letting.

It's a fairly niche requirement for you to need a bit of both - good luck!

Try REIS they do a range of strange policies aimed at Motorsport including tool insurance etc, they are also ok at tailoring policies to suite your needs.
