de rating trailer plates?

what are the legalities of altering trailer plates. ive just bought a single axle brian james covered trailer rated at 1300kg max. my current tintop has a 2050kg gvw so is fine by 150kg for my license.
if i was to alter my tintop to closer to 2500kg (for extra sleeping space,as i usually sleep in the passenger seat of the volvo when on track day) could i de rate the trailer to 1000kg total load? assuming my car and all my gear weight circa 650kg! (leaving 350kg for trailer unladen)

I take it when you say 'alter my tintop' you mean buy a bigger one....

I don't think there are any issues with de-rating trailers, you might even be able to get a new plate from brian james for it (no harm in asking them)

There is no problem with having a lower rated plate on a trailer. We bought a new Brian James trailer which they plated for us to bring the total trailer, load and vehicle within the 3.5 tonnes which was my son's license limit. We were also given the full plate rating for the future if we needed it.
Hope that helps.

Good idea getting one from Brian James if they'll supply it. No quibble from the police and might help preserve value if you sell in the future.

thanks guys. i thought that would be the case! the main issue i had (or meant in my post) was say if the unladen trailer weight is 375kg and tintop 2475kg ive only got 650kg for my car and all my gear which could be a struggle with the ammount i carry!
or can they legally de rate the unladen weights to give a bit more room for error? cheers

eg a trailer with 350kg unladen and 750kg max imposed load or a trailer unladen 250kg with 850kg imposed are still 1100kg!
the heavier the unladen weight the less loading capacity i have as im assuming i cant carry 750kg of car, fuel, wheels, tyres, spares on a trailer plated at 650kg max imposed load?

i also understand that a trailer weighs what it weighs but would this ever get checked by the authorities? and would 50kg-100kg removed from the weight be illegal!

If the plod pull you for over loading they'll take you to a weigh bridge and weigh your car and trailer and see if you are legal eg within GVW/GTW/MGW , they won't unload your trailer and check the weight of the payload. Getting trailer plated to show greater payload will only mean it will be overloaded if weighed.

Keep your trailer looking nice and tidy (loaded properly and lights working) and drive reasonably and the plod will never bother you in my experience

cheers. ive never been stopped before but was thinking of an mpv for extra room when away with car. the trouble is the gvw is 400kg higher than my tintop meaning id be over the 3500kg limit unless i take 250 kg off the trailer plates!

I spoke to Brian James about doing the same last year. They were really helpful and it seems it's not uncommon for them to have to do it

I didn't bother in the end as I bought a van to tow with instead, but I believe it was both.

I delt with this whole situation a while back but due to drinking too much wine on a school night I cant remember or be bothered to do a search. Have a look.

I am sure the not so great but still old liecence worries about the plated MAX load of your trailer. In this case it wont matter what you do. The MAX load considers the trailer weight and laden weight. in your case, it seems, 1100kg.

I think, for you, being that close to the limit and as serious into racing as you are, just take the plunge and take the tow test.

if i can get my unladen to 300kg ill have 750kg imposed load which is ampul for me. with the mpv i can shove bits in the boot to keep weight from overloading the trailer axle! simples

ok I'm getting confused now (not hard at this time in the morning)

I'm assuming you don't have a trailer 'E' licence - but what year did you pass you test ?

what's your tow vehicles:
kerb weights ?
MAM (max allowable weights) ?
max. braked towing weights ?

(or what are the models / engines / years ?)
