When to IVA

What do the regs say you are able to do on a vehicle before becoming liable to IVA? For instance if I wanted to convert a small hatchback from FWD to rear engine RWD would I need IVA or just some different form of inspection to ensure the engineering etc was safe.

However, if you use something like the original ford focus, which has a transmission tunnel, and use a kit from the States that allows a V8 to be installed (bolt in engine cradle), along with a live rear axle (iirc), using existing suspension mountings, then you won't need to IVA etc. I'm sure same method could be used on a variety of cars.

Was thinking about modifying an MG BGT to modern suspension using Mazda RX8 subrames - which would be modified to fit existing MG mounting holes

I've always thought this to be a can of worms.....

Is an IVA required when chopping out rusty pieces of chassis on a tin top? Because in theory the quality of work/welding would need to be checked.
Also what about converting say an escort mk2 to grp4 spec; new suspension turrets etc.. Should need an IVA!

From a common sense point of view a full strip down and rebuild of a car should need to be iva'd to check the work, or would an mot be sufficient?

Chopping out rusty bits of chassis count as a repair - dodgy work should be flagged by the normal MOT.
The key is if the shape of the metal changes in the chassis it's considered a modification that needs IVA if the shape stays the same it's a repair.

It's been done like this to make the wording easy to draft while being as black and white as possible.
