205 GTI - re-shell or restore/repair
My recently acquired 205 GTI needs some body restoration. Some work will be required for MoT next year as a minimum, but there are other areas that
could also do with sorting before they go any further.
In summary:
1. OSF suspension turret needs a section cutting out and replacing
2. OSF inner wing needs patching behind the front panel and inside the wheel arch
3. NSF chassis leg needs a section removed and replaced adjoining the gear box mount
4. OSR sill needs a section replaced (might be more behind the outer sill that needs work too)
5. Rear sub frame mounts and underside needs stripping of corrosion and reprotecting
I can do all the stripping, cutting out and prep myself and have a very good local car body restorer who can do the welding and repainting for me.
Estimated cost for the work is £700-£1,000 depending on the full extent of work.
The car is a Black "F" plate 1.9 and is totally original; all windows, panels, paint, engine, g/box, even the original dealer fitted
number plates.
However, I also have the option of a what I believe to be a solid rot free shell, which has been partially repainted. It's correctly registered
in the sellers name with V5C and declared SORN. The shell is from an "H" plate 1.6 and is in White - the colour I actually wanted!
The shell would cost ~£650.
Dilema....
Patch-up/restore the original and keep going; quickest and probably cheapest, but will probably have to keep patching over time.
Re-shell into a solid shell; Shell could be fully waxoyled and protected before building, better longer term option, higher cost and more time as it
would inevitably need lots of parts to complete the build.
What would would you do....?

Both! - Buy the shell and store it, in mean time fix up the black one to ensure its MoTs well (cant throw away the advisory sheet anymore)
Then sell the black one as a good runner with no major work required then put some of the money towards an absolutely rotten/writen off car to rebuild
the white ones mechanics.

It's an option, but I think it would suck up too much time and money overall. I want to be on the road for the summer.

I'd say it depends on what you want to do with the car. To be original, you need to restore the black 'shell. That way the engine and
chassis numbers should match as wella the details on the V5. If the work is done correctly, it will last a long time. The white 'shell is a
different car altogether so should be treated as such. The black car would be nothing more than a donor which would be scrapped once raped for bits.

To me the better option is to re-shell it, the only advantage to keeping the original shell is for originality. It sounds like a re-shell would make a
better car.
I've never got into the whole keeping a car original thing personaly though

The attraction in keeping it original is "perceived" value for future resale. They're getting rarer and appreciating quite nicely
and straight original cars are always worth a bit more.
That said, if I re-shelled it then it would be a younger car in potentially better condition, albeit a 1.6 with an engine change to 1.9.

Whoops...just had a long conversation with the seller and ended up buying the body shell
Now need to sort out collection and plan the project.
Tax runs out e/o December on the current car and now I'm not restoring the shell no reason not to use it come rain/shine/snow/grit whatever

I agree they look good in white, especially if you get all the trim looking box fresh so you get that strong contrast.
I'm a little confused, If you reshell a car is it legally the first car still with a new shell or is it the second car with new running gear? Or
does it depend how you do it?
What are the plans for the left overs?

The finished car will take the identity of the new shell with a new engine no, and in this case a change from 1.6 to 1.9.
The old shell is a rotten in places, not sure of the full extent until its fully stripped, but may well be scrapped.
