bmw m - worth the extra cash
What does the collective reckon to the M variant of bmw cars?
Are service and running cost much more? Is it worth the extra
Let's say question is z4 3.0 vs Z4m. £5k for 1 sec.

I've got an E60 M5 and with my rose tinted specs taken off, its a frikin amazing piece of machinery.
If I put my rose tinted glasses on again, all I can say is that there are cars, there are BMW 5 series cars and there are M5's. I don't
care what car someone else is in, the mid range of this car is astonishing and I doubt many hyper cars will beat it! 8250 red line, NA and V10 growl
(H&S exhaust) is simply magical. Oh yes, I can also get five people in and their luggage.
Hope this little bit of impartiality from me helps?

Depends totally on you really. From what I read, the 335i is quite a piece of kit, but it's not an M3 (or M4 as they now are).
The extra second is probably not the whole story either as M cars usually feature the active diff and other revisions to suspension, brakes etc. so
it's probably better to drive. Butt then where and when are you really going to get to experience that "extra"? I can't see
that you'll be off to brands hatch in it every weekend.

also in terms of the z4 iirc your get proper hydro steering not electric rubbish
lots of little changes make for an allround better package
plus your allways going think, should have got the proper version if you buy the more sensible option

An E60 M5 or the Touring version (estate) or an M6 are definitely on my list.
I had a late E39 M5 and that was spot on, Evo magazine did a test of all the M5's from the first to the last and they rated the E39 as the best
of them all

I have just bought an E61 535D, and I deliberately avoided the M-Sport version. The suspension makes them slower from A to B than the Sport and SE
spec cars, as the M-Sports are so hard they find every lump and bump on a road... Granted they look good with their fat wheels, side skirts and
leather accessories, but I was not impressed by the sporty feel!
I can't comment on the Z4, but as that is a sports car rather than a fast estate, the M-Sport kit might well make it more desirable. It
certainly seems to add about 10% to the price of any Beemer as far as I can tell....

M sport gets you better resale value but costs more.
I wouldn't get another bimmer that wasn't an m sport.
My e60 m sport was much better than the non m sport.
If it's an older bimmer it won't cost much more but they sell super quick so make ye mind up quick.
One final note.
I'm drunk so maybe talking cr@p lol

Considering a remap twybrow?
I've not looked into it completely but assume the autobox is all good for it (that's perhaps why it's there in the first place as
they don't do a manual version - too much torque?)

Considering yes. But I have only had it for a few weeks, so happy to wait until Spring! The box is the weakest part of the drivetrain - it is this
that limits the tuning that can be done. Most say that 360bhp and associated torque is about the safe limit of the box. But others are running 500bhp
through it with no problem!
M5 touring is on my list for the future - I dread to think how much it will cost to run!

M Power Z4
+
LSD
good looks
stunning engines
_
high running cost
and high servicing
Standard Z4
+
still looks good
3.0 straight six is superb
Better fuel consumption
lower insurance
cheaper to buy
-
no LSD
If you tight go for a 3.0 diesel 330d 530d remap it and it will be as quick as the Z4

LOL - 500bhp - yeah right!
M5 touring running costs - TBH, I think for the performance, the running cost are pretty reasonable.

Why not, I don't doubt that figure is possible out of a 535D but it would be a bit more than just a remap!
I can't be arsed doing that on a daily driver (well not any more!) so a straight laptop only job for me. Well maybe a couple of other minor
things to help breathing etc depending on cost.

Wheels are too big tires are too expensive, suspension is too hard, gearbox is too rough, but when you press on everything comes together and makes
everything perfect! I am m all the way and wouldn't have a non m after an m
Oh and they looks the mutts nuts.

^^^ some good points made.
the choice:
Z4 3.0 04 reg 25 k (!) £ 6,000
or
Z4M 3.2 06 reg 75 k (!) £ 10,500
heart says go for the M but the sensible head says the 3.0. I doubt my old granny style of driving will tax the 3.0 let alone the M.
(Ayrton-Hamilton is not my middle name) .... but then I have less years driving ahead of me than behind so why not???? or ...........

I've had 3 bmws, 2 were m's, 1 SE. I ended up buying lots of m sport bits for the SE says it all really. I'm currently looking for a
cheap 330 to run around in due to an impending house project.
When that's out of the way I've been given the go ahead on an 'M' car treat. I just can't decide whether it will be an
e90 M3 v8 or a V10 M5. The M cars are fantastic machines but they will cost more to run/maintain it's just fact.

I've had an E61 535d M sport for nearly 4 months and I love it! I'm really surprised at the comments above that the m sport is too harsh
because I don't find that at all. I find it to be solidly planted at all times and great to drive. It's probably the smoothest riding car
I have owned so far in fact. And the engine....
I drive 112 miles round trip 3 days a week and I actually look forward to my commute. I get my podcasts lined up on my phone, set the cruise control
and just sit back and relax. Then from time to time I have a blast on the twisty bits and use the auto box sport/manual mode to get a bit more
involved in the drive. My average consumption is just a tad short of 40 MPG which is nothing short of amazing for a 286BHP, 155+MPH, 1.8 ton estate
car!
The other thing about the m sport is the way it looks. Obviously a subjective point but I think it looks great, especially in touring form.
Here's a link to my website where I am doing a 'log book' of my experience with the car.

Sorry yeah, 500 was a bit high a quick Google brings up this one at 420bhp!
Re the M5 Touring - granted it is a hugely practical rocket ship and it may be pretty reasonable as such, but these things are relative!

Don't get me wrong the ride etc isn't bad compared to lots and lots of cars it's just not silky smooth like a bmw se or a merc,
which are at the top of the game for comfort.
