Rouge traders.....
Cut a long storey short, young employee at work recently, (last weekend) purchased a second hand Astra diesel.
After 1st day kept going into limp mode, they blamed speed sensor.
Said it was cured but anything over 65 it continued to go into limp mode, after messing with abs he then had two days of abs light not going off.
Just called me after fetching car back "all sorted" to tell me abs light is not coming on at all, I had warned him when he collects it to
make sure it comes on then goes off when he turns key, if I was a betting man then it's a safe bet I think to assume the bulb as dissapeard.
Am I correct in thinking this is now part of the mot, check light comes on and goes off after a set time? What is the amount time for a Astra abs
light to go out? What advice should I give, I've told him not to touch the dashboard to go looking if the light as been removed but what should
he do? CBA ? Trading standards ?

Method of Inspection:
1.
If the vehicle is fitted with an ABS and/or ESC system, check that the relevant warning lamp(s):
a.
is fitted
b.
illuminates
c.
does not indicate a fault
d.
in the case of ABS only, follows the correct sequence of operation.
Note: The sequence varies with the type of system. Refer to VSI, manufacturers or other reliable data, e.g. purpose produced charts, books, etc
2.
Check the presence and condition of all visible ABS and ESC system components.
Reason for rejection:
1.
A warning lamp:
a.
is missing
b.
does not illuminate
c.
indicates a fault
d.
for ABS does not follow the correct sequence of operation.
2.
An ABS or ESC system component obviously missing or excessively damaged.

Garage or private sale?
Assuming a garage then Sale of Goods Act, return the vehicle and ask for a refund as they have had ample opportunity to resolve the problem.

Did he purchase from a dealer/garage or private? If so, do they advertise they belong to any trade associations/standards?

Trading Standards.
Wouldn't even bother with trying any other route. Also VOSA perhaps
Mention it to retailer though as they may be interested.

Ditto, they will do the same again and someone less able or informed will get shafted.

If they was clever they would solder the abs light to the engine management light so it came on briefly.
He needs to contact trading standards and gather evidence of what they may have done.

Some might say clever, others might say provably involved in potentially lethal practice. Anyone doing such a thing and selling a car on without the
new owner knowing should have the book thrown at them.

May be worth his while writing a little note about the problems, slip it in the glove box or service book (if one exists) or behind sun visor so
hopefully a future buyer is made aware of the same ongoing problems.

Blimey it's he most expensive car on his forecourt aswell,
dangerous and should not be a trader selling cars like that could put someone's life in danger,
Name shame and tell fading stds about the sale before some poor person buys crap from him,
Glad you got it resolved though

While internet reviews tend to be more biased towards the bad, there are some dangerous cars being sold there.
