New to the site and kit cars
Hi everyone, I am new to the site and kit cars in the whole. I've had my tiger cat e1 for a little while and now just starting to add bits and
make the car my own. The car is currently running a 1.6 pinto so looking to up grade this. I know zetec will be most advise but unless some one has a
complete set up for sale my funds will be limited for this. So just wondering if any one has upgraded from a 2.0 205 pinto they no longer want also
looking for the other bits
Thanks
Dave

Welcome to the site. There is constantly a lot of engine packs for sale on here. If you donate/contribute you can have access to all the new items for
sale.
I have completed almost 80% of my car from that section so it does work.
What's you plan for the car is it to use for track days or just something a little more fun on the road.
You can buy brand new Zetec 2.0 engine with box for under a grand. This is without ancillaries though.
Thanks

Hi Dave, welcome aboard!
pinto to zetec, yes good choice, but also required a new exhaust as it is on the other side, which can cause complications for wiring etc as it may
need to swap sides or move too.
When I had my 2l pinto Xtreme I was looking into (well apart from the bonkers v8 plan) to switch to duratech, yes more expensive buts has everything
on the same side as the pinto.
I am not sure how much more you will get from a fairly cheap 2l pinto, mine was pretty standard and after spending probably close to a grand, I was up
to 110hp and a decent amount of torque coming in low down which is what I wanted. cheaper than a swap and made it run sweet, but depending on what
your 1.6 gives you you may not get much more. (400 of that was on a rolling road session to get it setup properly with new camshaft etc)
you can of course tune a pinto lots more and 150+ is fairly common, but you will spend a fortune, which I decided wasn't justified on old tech.

Hi thanks for the reply, car will be mainly used for road, occasional weekends away uk / Europe etc and the odd track day.
Buying the zetec engines seems to be the cheap part it's then the other bits to go on it I don't really want to be splashing out over 2k
tbh so 2 choices
My current 1.6 was rolling roadbed at 75bhp at the wheels
1. Go zetec and buy bits as they come up for sale
Or
2, look at just going to the 2.0 pinto and maybe upgrade to electronic ignition as that may well suit better for how I am going to use the car?
Is there a list of items that would be needed to go zetec

Their is a few threads with everything and every step needed for a number of diffrent engine including zetec and duratec. I will message a friend
about his recent upgrade as i think his zetec lump may be up for sale. Also may help to add a location to your profile as may have a few local
buildrrs near to you.
Last of all welcome to the mad house

Hi Dave,
Welcome to the forum, you found the right place!
Lots will suggest going Zetec, but on a budget and with a 1.6 Pinto already in the car it makes good sense to go to a 2.0 Pinto. You will be able to
reuse a lot of parts and get the change done quickly. A 2.0 will give you plenty of power and torque and make a good drive.
Post up some photos of your car as well, it may well be known to other forum members.

Hi, welcome to the forum! I had a standard pinto 2.0ltr engine in my Tiger Cat E1 when i got it and spent last winter upgrading it. I probably spent
in total around £1000 and managed to go from roughly 80bhp to 145bhp - I however spent quite a while sourcing the parts and waiting for good deals to
come up. I have seen pinto engines on eBay which have been upgraded (re-bored to 2.1, ported head, cam and lightened flywheel) go for around 600 - 800
if you manage to get one which would save you a lot of hassle as you can just drop it in (after you get some carbs, if they arent included - I
recommend twin weber 45s).
Other than that, there are some good posts on this forum regarding the pinto to Duratec swap. I know Flackmonkey had a good one going.
good luck
Matt

I'd say stick with the pinto's if your on a budget
find a 2.0 in good order and spend any money you've got left on a decent cam with a vernier pulley and some sensible head porting (you
don't have to go for big valves)
if you can't afford a ported head (or don't fancy porting one yourself) then look for an EFI head with the egg shaped inlet ports as these
are slightly better than the older ones in standard form
forget about 2.1 conversions, its a lot of money for a small power gain (although the extra torque is nice)
forget about twin webers / dellorto's unless you find the deal of the century - get some bike carb's instead with a DIY manifold from
fastdan (ZX9R, R1, etc...)
and get an electronic ignition kit - ideally a something like megajolt or nodiz that you can keep even if you swap engines
as a bonus things like the bike carb's and megajolt / nodiz can be swapped onto a zetec and most other engines later if you liked
or if you still want to go down the zetec route have a look at the 1.8 blacktops - they are cheaper than the 2.0, already have a lighter flywheel and
with a set of cam can make about the same power as the 2.0 anyway.
even in stock form they are just a nice lively engine
(I had one in the last tintop, now I've got a 1.8 duratec in the new one and its just not the same )
(ps - a 205 pinto block has no real advantage unless your planning to bore it out to a 2.1 or turbo it, so not really worth paying extra for over the
older 20 blocks

I have a 1,9cvh and have considered going to a Zetec and still might in time, but equally there is a lot to be said for just driving and enjoying what
you have. I figure in the air figure for my power might be 120bhp and that feels like plenty on the road, auto testing, and on odd track days. The
second half of the back straight seems a bit long but bar that, it's good power.
So if I where you I might also keep my eye out for a 2l pinto kit coming out of another car but would enjoy what I had in the meantime.
Oh, and welcome!

Zetec package here if you are interested - http://www.turbosport.co.uk/showthread.php?t=603493
you may even be able to recoup some of the costs from the bits you do not need.
But as others have said - have a look out for a sensibly modified 2.0 Pinto as a minimal effort - 130hp shold be a resonable target figure.
Another option keeping the services the right way around is the 1.6 sigma/Zetec SE. not a cheap option as you will need a new bell housing but the 1.6
is vbery light, very tunable and can be run on bike carbs with a NoDiz ecu (as can the Pinto).
The other favourite option that often comes up as a swap package is the Vauxhall XE worth keeping an eye out for this one.
Have fun planning, searching but most of all driving it.

Thanks guys that's all been really helpful, I'm thinking that 2.0 is the way to go for me at the minute, my brother in law races in the
750 motor club and sure he's gotta 205 block lying around so it will be heads and ignition needed I can always go zetec later. I have seen some
selling with a modified standard loom and ecu are these any good?
I am based in Burton so hopefully easily placed I need to up date my profile and will get that done

or
