Inboard brake
Afternoon all,
What does the IVA test say regarding inboard brakes?
The only problem I can think of it you'd loose braking if a drive shaft snapped. But how often that happen?
I'm thing of a setup like this:

I don't remember reading anything about the location of a brake disc, only that the braking system must achieve the required effort vs
kerbweight, and the fronts lock up before the rear.

I assume the inboard brake would only be for the rear wheels? and the fronts still have callipers/disks on the hubs?

I would assume that an inboard brake would require some sort of connection to the wheel, so driveshafts are probably a good idea...

Jaguar ran inboard rear discs for 50 years, Alfa also had some cars with them as well.
The only drawback is losing heat from them.

Check this guy's photos on facebook. The earlier ones from 2013.
He has inboard brakes and the car is on the road.
I believe he is a member here, or was.

ISTR that the citroen DS had inboard discs at the front, and some elderly Jags. I can't think of anything modern.

NSU RO80 had inboard brakes at the front

Jaguar brakes were moved outboard in 1993, which isn't that elderly, when you're my age!
The Citroen 2CV also had inboard front brakes; as did the AlfaSud (with handbrake operating on the front). The 1970's/'80's RWD
Alfas (eg. the 75, the GTV6 and up to and including the SZ in the early '90's) used a rear mounted transaxle with inboard brakes, too.
I had a Raffo Tipo 12 kit car that used the AlfaSud engine, transaxle and inboard brakes, moved to a mid-engined location, and several other kit cars
used this set-up (including the Pelland/Kudos).
As said, cooling (also bear in mind heat-soak from the brakes to the diff) and access to change the pads/discs are the usual objections, but can be
overcome with care and thought.
Plenty of single-seaters run the set-up suggested, particularly on hillclimb cars (though in that instance you hardly need to worry about heat
issues), and indeed many get away with a single rear disc and caliper.
There's certainly nothing to stop you in the IVA regulations

I didn't realise that Jags had them so late. I was going to say 2CV then wasn't sure.

My Alfasud had inboard front discs.
The drive shaft bolts snapped, I lurched right at an alarming speed
Not an issue for IVA
Handbrake can use calipers made for that or second mechanical arrangement
I eat to survive

I breath to pi55 my ex wife off (and now my ex partner)

I seem to recall that inboard brakes have some strange effect on suspension movement when braking and cornering at the same time but I'm blessed
if I can remember what

I think if there is an effect it will depend on the suspension type. It's really no diffrent to engine breaking after all (just a bit more off
it!)...

Most Jag based Cobra Kits have inboard brakes.
Only thing to be aware of is that if you have anti dive for outboard brakes built into your suspension then inboard brakes impact on that.

The TVR wedges use a Jag setup at the rear with the inboard brakes, getting at them was a pita, however you probably will not have that problem. On
track days they would get so hot that not only would the pads smoke, but the grease in the universal joints would get hot enough to start leaking
out.
Make sure you duct plenty of cooling air at them or you could get problems with the diff and CV joints.

Sud driveshaft bolts have a habit of working loose is not loctited enough. I remember lying under my Sprint in damp gutter by Norwich cathederal doing
up the shaft bolts so I could drive home!

My E Type has inboard brakes on the rear, all but the Mk2 jags had the same design back end up till about 84.
It does mean any joints in the shafts between the brake disk and the wheel hub become MOT tested.
