Old Vs New: Rallying

Again I find myself watching old videos of in car rallying.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ns4iJZUuV6k

I cant see how the modern car \ driver pushes things this far. They may go faster as technology has progressed, I guess its more a case of stupidly thin roads combined with raw untech assisted cars. I have seen the modern rallying in car stuff, it just dont frighten me as much.

Discuss. . .

Track days ARE the best thing since sliced bread, until I get a supercharger that is!

Everything old is better than everything new, that's internet discussion rule Number 1.

I learnt that when we had to use 33kbs dial up, those were real modems that real men used. Not like this broadband we have today, its way to easy.

I lost interest in mainstream rallying when the cars could no longer scream.
Amateur rallying is far more watchable.
Also, WRC tv coverage is terrible.
And I legally enforce all forms of motorsport had to use a stick shift.

Rallying lost itself back about 10-15years ago when the FIA got more heavily involved. They realised there was lots more money that could be made.
Instead of just turning up at a stage and paying a reasonable sum to park/watch that stage, you now have to buy a weekend ticket that's 3 figures.
They tried to market like F1, and charge the same way.
Then they kept meddling with rules and classes.
Combine those with the exciting manufacturers leaving, and the lack of 'stage to road' crossover that rally cars used to give (mk2 escort, audi quattro, impreza etc).
When was the last time you saw a car on the road and thought, oo that was last years rally champion. Not only cuz no bugger watches anymore, but cuz no manufactures sell there cars based on rally sucess.

Seen this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWBOKD6fGu0

New driver, albeit old car- still looking quick to me!

I found a couple of more recent Manx incar to compare - I think a lot of the Ari video impact is down to it being on the IoM - the roads being so narrow, bumpy, etc - and obviously WRC doesn't go to IoM - so it's hard to find something directly comparable.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQ_2LbcANd4 - OK '94 is a while ago now - but I'd say much moved on from 84 in many ways, although Higgins calm narration belies the actual pace he is taking - it looks as frightening as Ari's drive I think.

Then something from 2014 - so in an actual 'WRC' car, although he is clearly slower and it does not look as impressive as either Vatanen or Higgins - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vsUwM0akRw (compare his approach to the 'bump' at 3:40, to how Higgins hit it - in the above video at 1:50)

But rallying has definitely lost the excitement that the 'old' RAC Rally used to have!

One of the problems I find with rallying and BTCC is when the cars are all stickered up it's hard to tell one from another.. they're pretty much all the same shape!

Yep. Look no further than Formula 1 to witness the sheer incompetence of the FIA in action. Everything they touch turns to crap.

Less appealing with the big wings and wide arches.
