Mondeo Mk 4 Rear pad change / Surprising brake pad life
I'll need to change the rear pads on my Mk4 Mondy soon. Can anyone who has done this let me know which windback tool they used as I need to make
sure I get the right one. I have a cheap Laserline clockwise tool but not sure if it will do it.
On another note I'm amazed how long the pads have lasted. The car has done almost 70k. I got it at 19k so would be surprised if the pads had
been done already.

Not surprising really, as, rear pads only do about 20% of the work on a braking system.
Beware of the Goldfish in the tulip mines. The ONLY defence against them is smoking peanut butter sandwiches.

Fair point but on previous cars they have never lasted this long and on a big car like the Mondeo it surprised me.

Not sure about the Mondeo, but I do know that this job on my 2005-2010 Passat required the use of VCDS when changing the rear pads, but then it has an
electrically operated handbrake.

I have never bothered with the special tool. Always just used a pair of grips. Any marks left are nowhere near the usable part of the piston. Yes,
they do wind back clockwise. Don't do what my brother did on Saturday and wind them right out. Brake fluid everywhere!!

I have one like this that works fine. Used it on the wifes old Focus ok so guess the Mondeo would be similar.

^^ as above the cheap wind back tools work fine, but you may find the pins need 'adjusting' to fit the calipers....
my cheap tool came with a double sided disc like the above
one side claimed to fit various things including newer fords, the other claims to fit various other cars including the older ford ones like the
sierra....
but as far as I can tell neither side fits any ford without some 'adjustment' - for my C-Max that ment taking the narrower set and
removing half the thickness of each pin !

My dads rear pads only lasted 20k or so, front ones are still original.
The thinking is, that because they only do 20% of the work, the pads get wet and crumble, because they don't get the heat to dry them out?
Who knows, but apparently quite common

Thanks for the suggestions - just ordered a tool, and yes Mr Whippy, I think they are a bit stiff!
The fronts lasted about at least 40k, possibly 55k assuming they hadn't already been changed before I got the car.

I've got what looks to be the identical tool. The adapters that came with it did not fit on my Focus (wrong pin spacing), but the shop had the
correct one for sale on its own and I couldn't be bothered adapting the existing ones.

I ended up ordering an ebay kit with multiple different adapters for less than £14 delivered to hopefully it will do the job.
