Selling the wifes tintop

Just a quick question.

Selling my wifes car and have had a couple of emails from an "interested" buyer. They have asked for more photos and info. I have explained to them that the car is on finance with VW, and there is an outstanding amount which will need to be cleared.

They have now come back and said they want to run a HPI check and need some more details. I am in two minds whether the buyer is genuine, just a feeling the way the emails are written... Can the extra info they are asking be used in a bad way ?

for the HPI check, they are asking

" I will need the VIN number, V5 serial number and V5 issue date."

Cheers

Pretty sure an HPI check just needs plate.

Although this indicates further checks can be made using that info

Thanks guys,

Just spoken to the DVLA who confirmed that it is not unusual for a more detailed "HPI" check, to ask for this information.

Still not sure it is genuine, but we will see.

Cheers

If it worries you tell them it's now sold.

To get the full cover from HPI you do need all those details, but they can be added at a later date.

If in doubt walk away, but they could be genuine and cautious.

Have they been to see the car? I'd maybe expect them to want those details once they were reasonably committed if it is an expensive car?

Nope, they have not seen the car. Apparently they don't live that close.

Will run with it and see what happens, but at the end of the day, the car goes nowhere unless funds have cleared.

I don't agree with the dick, I'm looking hard for cars at the moment, a cheap car I'll just do basic checks but the cars costing 10's of thousands warrant deeper checks early on to see if they are worth pursuing, sure I will have rung or emailed the seller but won't commit to having a look until checks done.
That said most of the expensive cars are some distance from me, if it's close I can drive over and have a quick look

This is how I do it too.

I was looking for a C63 AMG last year when a low miles single owner car popped up in white on ebay.
Top line of the advertime was " Genuine White C63 AMG not resprayed or wrapped"

After a telephone chat I agreed to view. HPI report before setting off came back the car was grey a year earlier.

Quick call to seller and his reply was "you know what, you're right. I had it resprayed last year but they done such a good job I forgot I had it done"

Viewing cancelled and saved me a trip from Gatwick to Leeds
