Do you have a BMW 5 or 6 series? Quick q
I'm locked out of my 2004 645, again. Battery is flat, drivers door lock broken, boot lock is for a different key.
So I need to get a jump lead on it. 2 ideas are find the starter, which is not easy, the other is to smash the kidney grill and unbolt the bonnet
catch. If you have a 6 series, could you possibly look and see if this is likely to work?!

Just a theory, but could you charge the battery from the boot light? Or if you're lucky, do you have an accessory socket in the boot?

I can't get into the boot either sadly - that's where the battery is anyway!
Looking at it closer, the grill isn't an option.
It's a bleeping nightmare. Damned if I'm breaking the window again.

i seem to remember someone poping out a number plate or sidelight and putting some live into that

what i was told,sidelights would be on the permanate live curcuit so worth a try ?.

they wouldn't be, but the horn circuit may
be, and its usually switched negative.
ps I know of one bmw where the battery wasn't charging, the engine stopped on the m25, he managed to get to the hard shoulder, but
couldn't get out the car (all electric locks and windows)...
fortunately he had a mobile, and I had a spare key (and battery!) 20 mins later all OK
edit (but he did say bring a fire axe! )
edit: else if you do manage to open the bonnet, just energise the big wire from the alternator.

Can you jack up the front and get in at the starter or alternator by either removing the undertray or a wheel?

On my 1 series, removing the front bumper lets you get to the bonnet catch........might help?

Starter, why, its not permanent live, one part of solenoid would be.
If battery in back, then cables run from rear to engine bay. If you can see positive cable then a tiny needle or pin pushed through the insulation
will make contact, trickle charge it.
Can you call aa who got special tools to open doors, less hassle and maybe cheaper than window smashing.
... to avoid same situation in future, run wire from battery to underside, tape up the other end or fit asocket into which a charger can be
connected.

for the boot (US readers 'trunk' )
its not unknown to make a hole behind the no. plate. (again for US readers - license plate)

What makes it more depressing is that there's a trickle charger connected in the boot, but my pal turned it off! It's a nightmare but I
think I have to keep digging for the starter. Its parked on a driveway that is just 2 rows of flags withgrass in the middle , on a slope. I
can't get axle stands under it properly, I've had 2 under trays off, next is the subframe, and can't even see the starter yet!

If it's an e60 a guy in the AA opened my boot with a thin bar when mine had issues

Fit a 12S socket (if you haven't already got one fitted?!) and wire it direct to the battery (iirc pin 4 should be anyway). Then if it ever
occurs again, use a 12S plug to charge the battery.....

Do you know where the starter is exactly? I've got the 2 plastic covers off and the reinforcement plate too, and I can't even see a
starter!
