head gasket on GT-Four ST205

Its not my car but from what can tell its a toyota celica 4wd turbo?

Whats the scoop with replacing the head gasket? Presumably it being ohc (or dohc) the timing gear needs to be locked, does it need specialist tools?

Can head bolts be reused?

Without knowing cause of hg failure, is it worth the effort of fitting a new one providing block and head faces ars flat and in good condition?

I did mine on an ST185 GT4 and it was an arse of a job.

No specialist tools that I remember and proper timing marks for the cam's. There are 2? Braces between the inlet manifold and the block, an absolute ballache to get at. It was probably 10-12 years ago I did mine so the memory is a bit hazy! I do remember those bloody braces though.

Make sure it is the head gasket too. I've seen people replace these and not fix the issue. One turned out to be the rad cap, the other was a blocked over flow pipe.

I reused the head bolts with no ill effects. I did a track day, drag racing etc and all was well.

Just thank your lucky stars it's a celica and not an MR2!

Good luck!

Find the cause, rarer for the 205 to blow the gasket because it's a metal multi layer from the factory (185 was paper). Head bolts are stretch so should be replaced but people get away with it.

You sure it's HG failure? Symptoms and checks done so far?

As far as doing the work, it's a pig due to lack of space. But requires nothing special to set up or RE time. No need to lock anything IME.

IIRC they can crack blocks (same as MR2 Turbo), hopefully not that.

Aye, cracked block and cracked piston are all possible on the 205 engine, but let's hope not!

I had a Rev 3 Mr2 with a 3SGTE which is the same engine as a GT4 ST205 (later model). I build it from scratch after the ringland failed to a spec that would hold 500bhp but only got it to 380bhp at the time.

Should be fine to reuse the head bolts on the car. Depending on the year will depend on whether it has a metal or paper head gasket. Upgrade to the metal head gasket even if you have the earlier model its a good upgrade and its alot stronger.

Its a bit of a pain to do but not to bad tbh. usual procedure and no special tools needed.
