Anybody know about Escort RS Cosworths?
Thoughts on this. If I was ever going to be tempted into a different car it would be something like this.
Look at this on eBay ESCORT COSWORTH TRACK CAR WITH A 909 SHELL
A project, no kidding but if I invested in making it into a good track day car and got it road registered it could be a lot of fun and a sound
investment.
If it has never been invested and was built of new bits from back in the day I wonder if i could get it on an age related plate. . . .

I too have a soft spot for the Escort Cosworth (IIRC derived from a Sierra Cosworth).
That looks like it would take some effort to make roadworthy though!

At that price my immediate thought was 'not a real cossie'.
Then after reading, i thought 'bargain'.
Then I looked at pictures and thought 'shed', 'money pit' and 'can of worms'.

Reading the ad a little further it states RWD when IIRC Escort Cosworths were 4WD. I'd imagine that would take some effort to lose (and
restore) the FWD part of the 4WD system (if you wished to).

The pictures certainly show its true colours, white under the chipping red and an undertone of brown (rust)!
The RWD only part does not bother me. On track this may actually be a better set up. I certainly won't be trying to get this back to a road
looking car, that is not what i want from a track car. The roll cage would prevent this anyway.
Money pit, shed and can of worms. Probably.
Im tempted to take a look but it's bloody miles away and i won't have time until the end of the month, by then it would have gone.
The whole purchase also pivots on me selling the striker for the money I think it's worth. There is a lot of buzz around Strikers going for
sale at the mo and it is the right time of year. With a trailer, 2 sets of wheels and some parts to SC it is a ready to go package and one that has
lots of potential.

The 2wd conversion is not much to swap back to 4x4,but as you say I would leave it 2wd as the MT75 4x4 gearbox is horrible tbh.
Ref the shell, they rot really badly like the sierras,so rear chassis/sills need properly inspecting for rot.
Presuming it would need IVA to be made road legal?

Thanks for the info. My intension would be to stock lights and all required bits on to get it IVA and then, I guess, on to a Q plate.
Hydraulic hand brake and RWD escort soumds like drifting and power slide fun!!

It was quite popular to remove the front wheel drive as it made the car more exciting to drive.
You need the chassis number to see if it is an actual cosworth, as a bits and pieces car it may never be worth much more than it's company to
parts which is good news for the purchaser.

Its a 909 chassis which is a motorsport shell. These were sold by ford for motorsport reasons, welded in full cage as standard and no sunroof.
In my eyes that makes it as Cosworth as you can get. The ford masses generally like their cars original and untouched.
I see this as a good base for a track focused RS, the way they were designed.

I like to think of them as short wheel base Sierra Cossies (tarted up to look like an Escort as that's what Ford wanted to promote at the
time)
In fact the official Ford workshop manual for them covers all the Sierra's and Escort cossie's with only a few minor differences in spec.
and procedures between all the models (it also tells you which bits are special for the cossies and which were just taken from standard
Sierra's and Granada's)
I'd love a tidy motorsport shell for a project, its on my list if I win the lottery
Years ago a saw a very tidy track car made from a spare motorsport shell, but with 2wd Sierra cossie axles/suspension and a 5.7 Chevey LS V8, by all
accounts it was a pretty decent track toy
I think this is the one:

that look slike a rally school escort rs rather than rs cosworth. ford did shells for self build projects based around the rs2000 mk5 shell, that
looks like one of them, they were popular for reshelling sierra cosworths . that shell has the wrong back quarters possibly to have ever been a proper
escort cosworth. looks way over priced compared to other cosworth projects on ebay.

I thought all escort RS Cosworths were mk5 and therfore shared many of the same parts as the RS2000.
Im looking into it though, thanks.
It does seem a project but it is complete and running.
Again, it's really what it looks like close up.

No a real Escort RS Cosworth is a Sierra (mechanically and structurally), but they went to a lot of effort to make them look the same as the Escort
The fact that the cossie is based of a RWD platform is the give away, its got versions of the sierra's cossie YB engine (pinto based) mounted
longitudinally, the RS2000 has the DOHC engine that no one really likes and its mounted transversely.
The cossie uses the same gearbox as a later 2.0 XR4x4, the RS2000 4x4 used the same one as the old 4x4 mondeo's
but its also bigger than the Escorts - the wheel base is about 1" longer, its about 7" longer overall, its nearly 2" wider too....
most homologation specials from this era are like this - I remember the Metro 6R4 is meant to have only kept the gear knob from the standard car !

So I think you are saying that the one in the add is a ligit cossie. I recon it is due to the engine and drivetrain.
I'm going to phone around in Monday and see what is what.

sorry I'm not enough of an expert to say either way, defiantly not from just those pic anyway (having never owned one I'd hate to give you
bad advice)
All I can really say is its not a standard RS2000.
you never know what weird and wonderful creations folk come up with - there are quite a few rwd focus's that have been built by grafting a
sierra floor pan into them and some of them look tidier than those pics....
I guess you can always ask what history and paperwork they have for it etc....
