Tilt bed trailer ram
Morning all, my brenderup trailer ram has given up, does anyone know where I can get a replacement or thought of any other solutions for tilting the
bed? Mine was the pump and ram combined but I don't mind welding another pump on.

Are there hydraulic specialists near you they maybe able to repair it .

would the pump assembly etc from an engine crane work?
I am sure there were more reply's earlier, maybe a combination or 'words' have triggered some 'filters'

Morning all, sadly Ian the old ram is beyond repair as It has a score in the ram itself that's leaking, Gremlin I did think of an engine crane
ram but the only trouble is the are only a single action so nothing enabling them to be pumped back down.

Afternoon Davspeed, I'm guessing it's only a single direction ram??? If you stop it mid travel will it not just extend if pulled ie with
weight on the trailer if trailer isn't fully tilted to the floor?? Thanks Sam

I think it would if you had more weight on the rear of the trailer than the front. I used to use it with a Honda crx on the trailer so heavy front
end. It was also OK when unloading my current striker project. When jacked up the rear of the trailer is always on the ground, I am sure that if it
wasn't it would as you say lift the front up.
(Edit Yes it is single direction.)

Could you not rig it with a return spring like the ones used in Arbor Presses?

Thanks for reply davspeed, with regard to the spring that is a very good idea, I'm just trying to think what sort of thing uses a spring big
enough but not too long when relaxed.

You could look with the people thaat installs electric doors (gates) the flippant (is it a word??) ones use strong springs of various lengths.

I actually have 2 decent rams, one fully rebuilt, the other out a very powerful engine crane (could lift the cars front of the ground).
don't know the dimensions of yours?
was just about to put them on Gumtree

If you strip the ram you may find it is relatively simple and cheap to replace the chromed rod, you can either make an identical copy if you have a
lathe and can screwcut threads, or if you don't you can bore the piston out to slip over the rod and weld it in position.
I've done quite a few rams this way.

Worst case I'm a hydraulic hose engineer.
If you give me the details of the ram I may be able to get you one slightly cheaper than if you bought it yourself.
