Where’s the best place to sell a cheap (c.£500) car?

Hi,

It’s been a long time since I sold a car - where best to do it?

Thanks,

There are Facebook marketplace groups specifically for £500 cars, unfortunately you still get guys who will offer you £200 but it does work eventually.

In the past, I've given a cheap car to the local college,

if you do the sums..

All the while that is sat there, its costing in insurance, tax and fuel not to mention the cost and time to advertise and sell, and who knows..the next time you jump in it to drive, it could cost you a £500 repair bill..

Good suggestion. Many colleges will take them off your hands and use them to help teach students some basic mechanics.

Failing that you could try the army. Might sound daft, but there's an ATR (Army Training Regiment) local to me in Winchester and they get old cars in to teach new recruits basics mechanics. They're also partnering with my sons Scout group to offer a "Mechanics Badge" where the army help train the Scouts to do things like change the engine oil & filter.

Often better for others to benefit from some practical benefits of an old car.

Sold our Seat Ibiza on Ebay with a 1 week auction. Started with a nominal £100 starting price to get interest and show I was will to sell and got over £300 which was fine for what it was and with no aggro.
In my view if you know you selling price and are prepared to possibly wait - then use Gumtree or Facebook.

I sold my old Mondeo on ebay after a couple of attempts. First time was a couple of idiots from Birmingham who won the auction then wanted a test drive, tried to haggle, and then tried to insist I didn't fill in the V5c. My guess is they either weren't supposed to live here or had some other dodgy intentions.

I told them where to go.

Next guy came paid and left within 10 mins.

All down to whether you get idiots bidding.

For our Ibiza, they turned up in the dark, paid the cash checked the paperwork and drove off. Did not really look at the car at all :-)!
