Can anyone tell me the process of doing a compression check properly?

Can i compression check with the carbs & exhaust etc off the engine?

Should i leave in all plugs other than the cylinder i am checking? or is it ok to check it with all the plugs out?

Not really too sure what im at here...

All the plugs out and the carbs/TB's wide open. Healthy battery and crank crank crank until it is stable.

ok in that case my rings must be beat, running 65psi/70psi across all cylinders..

That heating it got at the weekend must have fucked things

I'd borrow someone else's to check before you start ripping things apart if you're worried about the numbers. I have a fairly cheap one and it never gives the figures qouted in the manuals. If your getting a reasonably equal figure accross all cylinders and you have no lack of oil pressure / power and no signs of excessive oil in the exhaust I wouldn't worry too much.

If the figures are low put a little bit of oil in the bores before you test it and see if the figure rises.
