Anyone interested in a Quaife ATB Diff Group Buy? (Take 2)
hobbsy - 26/11/08 at 12:34 PM

Not brilliant timing I know as its coming up for Xmas and everyone is skint and this isn't a cheap bit of kit.

I'm primarily interested in this unit:

http://www.quaife.co.uk/Ford-Sierra-7-Quaife-ATB-differential

Part number is QDF15Z

I'm approaching a few different sellers but the first response is "how many units are we talking?".

So at this stage I'm just after a show of hands.

I'm not ruling out other Quaife ATB's (or other products) as this may help to bolster the numbers and therefore the discount.

I can already beat the price Quaife have on their website by going elsewhere but I may be able to achieve the cheapest price by going direct so I'm not ruling them out!

It goes without saying I'm not doing this to make any profit and I don't even know at this stage if it will even come off - all depends on the numbers - hence the poll.

Re-posted as it seems poll choices containing a " cause problems...

Someone posted about a GB on fitting too (sorry I deleted the whole thread).

My response was:

Possibly. I could look into it after we've determined if this group buy is a go-er. (Or words to that effect).

Hobbsy,

I'm just about to buy a quaiffe diff for a UN1 will hold back a little if it helps

Cheers

triumphdave - 26/11/08 at 04:17 PM

I could be interested,I have a Cortina MKV live axle. How difficult are these to fit, changed plenty of standard difs for the MK2 Cortina, but never looked into fitting a LSD unit.

philw - 26/11/08 at 05:31 PM

I may be interested in one for an english axle, i can get one for £425 so if you can beat that?
Won't be for a couple of weeks though.

blakep82 - 26/11/08 at 06:15 PM

i'd like one for an atlas, but doubt i can afford one this decade

mads - 26/11/08 at 06:26 PM

interested depending on price. may sound stupid but i take it that you still need a diff casing for this to go in? and can it be a non-LSD casing or is the internal spacing different for LSD and non?
and whats the ratio?

would also look at fitting if reasonable.

7" sierra btw.

GeoffT - 26/11/08 at 08:45 PM

I could be interested in an ATB for the Escort MkII English axle. Would have to get well under the £345+vat from Rallydesign though.....!

intrested depending on price sierra 7 inch

hobbsy - 27/11/08 at 06:48 PM

Apologies I've been a bit slow in replying.

I've asked if we can mix and match and passed on the number of interested bodies so far. I'll wait until early next week then give them the final figure of those who are interested (as I said its not a commitment) then we can see what the prices end up like.

hobbsy - 28/11/08 at 10:44 AM

First reply is from Quaife themselves, assuming an order of ~15diffs they are offering a 20% discount.

Unfortunately they haven't given me a breakdown (i.e. 5 diffs = X percent, 10 = Y percent).

And they aren't the cheapest place to being with (which is a little weird as they are the manufacturers).

I am still waiting to hear back from two other suppliers though.

Please register any more interest as I know (in reality) that the numbers of hands shown here vs actual people who will take the offer up (based on discount etc) are two different figures!

hogman - 29/11/08 at 11:55 AM

Maybe for an English live axle, depends on the price etc

Simon Bell - 30/11/08 at 07:17 PM

Interested in 7" sierra ATB subject to pricing

hobbsy - 1/12/08 at 10:08 PM

Anyone a member on blatchat who can cross post this for me?

I thought I'd registered ages ago but now it seems its paid up members only. Argh.

They've done a successful GB on there before (about 18 months ago) and tried another back in Feb but it fell flat due to the supplier messing them around and some people dropping out.

I think there would still be some people who missed out last time to bolster our numbers and so a post is worthwhile.

philw - 17/12/08 at 05:10 PM

Is this dead in the water now?

hobbsy - 17/12/08 at 05:22 PM

I was waiting for a reply to my "give us more discount email". TBH at the moment its not worth it at 20% as you can almost get that by shopping around...

I'll give them a chase but as with a lot of people they're probably in full on Xmas wind down mode...

hobbsy - 6/1/09 at 09:01 PM

Just a quick update.

I've just sent a chaser email to one of the suppliers and I'm going to speak to Quaife in person at Autosport this weekend to see if I can squeeze an extra few percent out of them.

Once I get a final figure I will need a final list of who wants what with a reasonable degree of commitment.

hobbsy - 11/1/09 at 06:38 PM

Right it looks like 20% is all we're going to get. I spoke to Quaife at the Autosport show today and although they *may* have given greater discounts in the past 20% is as much as they'll give at the moment. They cited a few other big manuf's / resellers who spend £0.5m a year or more on their products and still only get 20% off.

So I've worked out the figures using their latest retail prices (gone up a bit again - argh!):

7inch Sierra ATB for push in drive shafts (QDF15Z)
Retail is £550+VAT = £632.50, 20% off = £506

7inch Sierra ATB if you need bolt on drive shafts (QDF15ZFL)
Retail is £775+VAT = £891.25, 20% off = £713

English (Mk1/2 Escort) (16 or 22 teeth spline halfshafts - please specify but the price is the same) (QDF5Z/16 or 22)
Retail is £450+VAT = £517.50, 20% off = £414

Atlas (Capri) (16 or 18 teeth spline halfshafts - please specify but the price is the same) (QDF6Z/16 or 18)
Retail is £645+VAT = £741.75, 20% off = £593.40

Freelander (QDF31K)
Retail is £585+VAT = £672.75, 20% off = £538.20

Someone mentioned UN1 and Cortina - both of these are showing as POA on the Quaife site so will have to ring them but I guess a similar ballpark to the ones listed above.

Also with reference to prices available elsewhere it seems Rally Design have finally updated their prices so they are near enough the same as the latest Quaife retail (maybe £25 less but not >20% less).

E.g. GeoffT quoted Escort as being £345+VAT (which it probably was a few months ago). Its now £425+VAT on Rally Design and £450+VAT is the retail price.

So my "not worth bothering at 20% as you can get near that shopping around" comment is not really valid any more.

Fitting wise Phil at Road and Race Transmissions (just down the road from Quaife so he can collect them) is willing to fit them for £90 (IIRC, need to check my notes but left them at work). If there are any parts that need replacing he can do this at the same time.

And so at this stage I need to know who is really serious so I can ensure we have got enough people to make it feasible. I know the timing isn't very good with Christmas credit card bills landing etc.

If you can email me at quaife@hobbsy.co.uk with which diff you want, your username on here, your real

name and whether you'd want it fitting at Road and Race. I'd need people to be able to drop their diffs out reasonably quickly and I can arrange courier collection for ~£10 or drop it off yourself.

I think 15 is still the magic number we need to hit.

I'll post here once I've had enough responses.

(FYI they come with a lifetime guarantee)

if only i had £600 for that capri diff
sorry still can't afford, i'm definitely out

philw - 11/1/09 at 07:12 PM

I'm still up for an English ATB, will have to pull the half shafts out and see how many splines are in there.

No worries - thanks for letting me know.

blakep82 - 11/1/09 at 07:32 PM

ooooohhhh! i don't know i'm having so much bother with my open diff at the moment, i need to fit it with 18 spline shafts. and the ATB diff will save soooo much bother. new side gears are £100 each, the diff may need a little machining too... wonder how much i could sell my open diff for? maybe, perhaps, don't write me off quite yet... its unlikely, but i don't know.

hobbsy - 11/1/09 at 08:37 PM

I would like to know a count of people who are serious by the end of this coming week ideally.

twybrow - 11/1/09 at 10:00 PM

I would be very tempted for an English diff, for a 3.54 RS2000 axle. The problem is, I do not know whether it is 16t or 22t, and I am in no position to be pulling the half shafts out just now (pushing madly for SVA).

Can anyone confirm of all 3.54 diffs (RS) use the same number of teeth? I have tried searching, and can't find any mention on the net as to how many it might have....

Have you seen the prices on Burton Power? When you get to checkout, the proce quoted is cheaper than this GB price....

ghostrain - 12/1/09 at 08:44 PM

Have you tried Rally Design for say a 3off or 5 off deal....they stock big quantities of the English ATB and may do a bulk buy deal on that unit only...trying to get to 15 units is a bit impractical....I know Quaife discounts are not that generous so don't expect any big discounts,

hobbsy - 12/1/09 at 08:47 PM

Well according to Quaife themselves (as I put in my post earlier) the max discount they give to anyone at the moment is 20% (even if they are spending >£0.5m in a year), this may have been BS but I can't see that RD can sell it at more than a 20% discount from retail and still make a profit.

As Quaife seem to keep increasing their prices if they have old stock they want to shift that they bought in for less I could be proven wrong...

philw - 16/1/09 at 05:25 PM

Well i'm f*****d, just been made redundant so i'm out.

hobbsy - 16/1/09 at 05:37 PM

Sorry to hear that philw.

It seems it is not a great time for this for a lot of people.

Maybe I'm being too optimistic.

Really need some more people to decide and respond - I've got to say the end of the month is probably the cut off.

If there aren't enough then it will be mothballed and I will probably just buy my own diff at full price I just thought we could all benefit this way...

mads - 16/1/09 at 06:34 PM

i'm in - i just need someone to tell me if i need to have a LSD already or does this just fit into an open diff? and anyone know where i can then get the diff rebuilt from? (yes,i'm a numpty and dont have a clue what i'm doing )

hobbsy - 16/1/09 at 06:48 PM

mads,

You can get ATB's that will fit into either but its less costly if its a diff with push in shafts. I currently have a 3.38 with push in shafts so the QDF15Z will go in and I can use my old drive shafts.

If you have a diff with bolt on shafts then you need to get the more expensive version I mentioned above.

What do you have?

I have spoke to Phil at Road & Race transmissions who are just down the road from Quaife and he can fit them for around 90quid. If there are any other issues with your diff that need sorting he can do his at the same time.

If the end of Jan comes along and we don't have the 15 we need for 20% I can probably still negotiate a smaller discount so please don't be put off coming forward if you want one.

Hope this answers your questions.

hobbsy - 26/1/09 at 09:06 PM

Very quick update as i´m working.

Basically I´ve been offered a different option we a lot lower quantities but still good discounts.

I´ll post details later when I have more time.

But its still VERY important that I have a show of hands of those who are firmly interested.
