mad-butcher - 30/5/08 at 08:28 PM

Hi Guys
Is there a problem with service pack 3, for the past year or so my laptops been quite happily downloading upgrades, the other day I had a problem which necesitated using the full system recovery, format and reinstal, all went OK till it downloaded service pack 3, now it downloads upgrades but will not instal them (keeps saying some upgrades could not be installed) KB890830/KB894864 I've had to block them on the laptop cos I'm sick of the yellow upgrade button also getting error code OX800706BE It's more anoying than anything
Many Thanks
Tony

Cant help anymore than to say reset your homepage (in Firefox - Tools/Options/Main) type in your new homepage: http://www.google.com or whatever you like

If you were selling Vista would you improve XP or make it worse with updates?

I leave mine set with no updates.

Considering MS will now supply a "downgrade" disk so owners of Vista Business and Ultimate can move to XP, it seems like even they are acknowledging that it doesn't suit everyone.

SP3 can offer up to 10% speed increase over an unpatched copy according to a few reviews.

Mad-butcher, try downloading the updates manually from the MS website and installing them, this has fixed similar issues I've had before.

SP3 has a known issue when installed on computer using an AMD CPU but has the intel CPU drivers present, a handy tool is available to check and resolve this issue before installing SP3. You can download it from:

XP SP3 Tool

It could be a few things most likely an IE7 issue or a tcp/ip stack issue --- with Xp it is really better to stay with IE6 or if you want tabbed browsing Firefox.

cheers guys found the cure
http;/forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=3308206&SiteID=17
just go to c:windowssystem32 and find and register wups2.dll
to do that, right click on it and select open with then Choose Program and find
c;windowssystem32regsvr32
if you choose to 'always use the selected program to open this type of file' then all you will have to do is double click on any dll to register it
once you have registered Wups2 all your problems will disappear
Thanks to a Gary o'Connor on that site for the info above
NOTE: this is only for the problem of XP with SP3 not installing updates.

This was on HP machines installed using the ISO.

HP make machines with AMD and Intel CPUs depending on the model.
