Cut off switch
renetom - 6/6/12 at 08:45 AM

Hi
Help required.
I would like to fit a cut off switch to kill engine and fuel pump. ( battery isolator switch with the red plastic key)
Can I just use the switch to cut power to the coils & fuel pump ?
Tried cutting positive & negative from the battery but the engine runs on.
Would this damage anything else ?
Not brilliant on electrics.
Thanks.

Hi,

I used an FIA cut off switch, cuts ignition as well as main live feed, otherwise the engine will run on with power supplied by the alternator. Got mine from CBS.

All the best,

Brian.

Not ideal to just cut the coils etc but it would work. There's better ways of doing it though. Use the correct isolator switch and pull the whole of the car electrical system through it, ensuring the alternator return is on the correct side of the isolator to prevent run-on.

Engine running on is because the alternator is providing the volts.

You need the correct switch with extra make break contacts on the back, you then make a resistor to earth and break the feed to the ignition/EFI circuits.
