After selling the Spire i have been rebuilding an old Alvis after 30 years off the road. Its now finished except for a couple of small teething problems.
It is -ve earth with dynamo. I have fitted a Caliber radio/mp3 thingy. It works all tickerdy boo when engine not running but when she fires into life there is both clicking and momentary cutting out. The clicking presumably is because there are no surpressors yet.but why is it cutting out?.This is only momentarily then on then off.
Any ideas?

if it is off while the starter motor is running then its probably designed to do that. (the acc position on the key-switch is often wired like that)
else it could be the drop of the battery voltage causes issues.

Much clicking in a dynamo, presume with a separate regulator box. I wonder if the "electrical noise" is too much for the sedative electronics and its going into some sort of protection mode?
I's suggest some suppressers first and see if you can improve it. Possibly even a big capacitor close to the radio too

Yes:- without it running radio is off a battery so nice clean 12v, its the charging kicking in i recon

Have you thought about fitting one of those alternators disguised as a dynamo?

Those electro mechanical regulators constantly switch and arc, you can leave it in place but inactive to preserve authenricity.

interference could be conducted over the wires or radiated, for wire borne interference an in line choke or capacitor may reduce and/or fix it. radiated would require screening of dynamo and/or cables, less easy. a simple fix would be to relocate aerial as far from the source as possible, i.e. stick it at the rear of the car.

were the original cars fitted with radios, if yes, then there is hope a radio (not necessarily the one you fitted) may work.

alternative is to record radio programmes and play back using cassette or mp3 player. I have a couple of John Peel show episodes recoded that are now quite precious as there will never be any new ones only drawback is that the news will not be current.
