is this the v engine diesel
if so i did one a month or ago
not to bad just a bit fiddly make sure you do the water pump at the same time

Not as bad a job as you might think. The advantage of the A6 is the longitudinal engine layout so no engine mounts etc to get in the way.

If it's like the A4 and Passat (and I suspect it is) you'll need to release and move the "lock carrier" (i.e front panel of the car including radiator) forward a few inches to give better access. After that, it's a case of finding TDC, tippex the bits that can move (or lock them in place if poss), remove the auxiliary belts, remove covers, remove timing belt.

Best to buy a full belt kit with tensioner, rollers etc. Also I think the A6 may want a new water pump at the same time if it's driven by the timing belt - false economy not to change it while everything is in bits.

As Mr. Haynes says, "reassembly is the reverse of disassembly". Allow yourself a day to do it. Probably cost you anything from £80 to £120 for the belt kit, another £50 maybe for the water pump. Expect to pay £300 to £600 for someone to do it for you depending on if its an independent or main stealer.

Loads of info and pics on the VAG sites if you want to give it a go.

I take it you just marked everything up with a pen/tipex took the belt(s) off and put the new ones on ensuring everything was aligned?

A useful tip is to remove the green bumper reinforcement bolts and replace them with 15" studded bar to slide the component carrier forward. gives loads of room to work and leaves the aircon undisturbed. You may need new quick release connectors for the rad hoses.

so apart from the time its a straight forward job?

I've priced up belts and full service items...

timing belt/idler/tensioner
aux belt
engine oil
filter
airfilter
fuel filter
transmission oil

£238...... Cars going good at 187k miles so it should be good for another 100k with the above done

Mark Allanson - 1/11/09 at 10:27 PM

The highest one I have seen had 435k, the owner had the oil changed every 7.5k and never used more than 1/2 throttle!
