Steel prices
David Jenkins - 19/2/08 at 04:21 PM

I looked over someone's shoulder on the train today, and saw a headline about steel prices.

Apparently they're just about to go up by 65% (or have just gone up...)

If you're planning to build a chassis, get your steel NOW!

whilst your on the point does anyone know if £6.28 is a good price for 25mm box section 2mm thick? and 5.10 for 20mm box?
cheers

surely the length will affect the price?

without knowing that snippet of information which you have carefully choise to omit, it is hard for me to say.

Miks15 - 19/2/08 at 04:46 PM

oops sorry it was for a 7.5m length, meant to put that on there

Confused but excited. - 19/2/08 at 04:47 PM

Steel sections come in stock lengths, usually 5M.
The price you get quoted is for a stock length. If you want it cut, it is usually charged at £1 per cut.

I've always thought of steel as being cheap, when you think of what goes into making it.

Think how much a 6 metre length of (tree) wood costs.

yep 25x25x2 E.R.W is about .80p a metre

smart51 - 19/2/08 at 06:28 PM

I recently paid about £2.00 per metre for 1" 18 SGW round tube. It came in 6.1m bars.

I work in the giant Corus works in Port Talbot
We can't make enough of the stuff. We're aiming for 5million tonnes of the stuff this year, thats quite a few seven chassis
The cost of raw materials, and the demands for more "greener" processes and my wages of course makes your sevens more expensive.
Sorry

Who is She??????????

Worldwide steel prices have been crazy for a few years now. All the parst i suply in Europe are steel based from China and this si one of our biggest issues. Along with straight tseel commodity pricing the other issue is the wild fluctuations in curency costs.

Just look at scrap costs. Only a few years ago scrap yards were compressing and stock piling cars. Now they cant get rid of the fast enough. Round our way you cant leave anything metal outside your house for afew hours before the rag and bone men take it away. I dont degrudge them any of it but darent leave stuff i want outside.

Lets not even start on copper prices.

our record was about 7 minutes, from starting to pile an old kitchen outside, to the pikeys taking oven hob and sink. Normally it lasts a few hours!

once spoke to a real rag and bone man with a cart, collecting old washing machines. Said he got paid something daft like £30 a tonne! Not worth the effort i told him...

I know, the one I tried to bribe last week wanted a fortune!

The same article said that platinum prices have gone totally through the roof - anyone need a new catalytic converter sometime soon?

jono_misfit - 19/2/08 at 10:25 PM

In general, If you buy a ton steel today, wait a month then sell it you'll have made £30 profit.

My brothers a steel trader and says its going crazy and not likely to stop for a while. A lot is to do with the huge demand from India and China. He thinks the problem is compounded as a lot of the new furnaces built are arc remelt furnaces not blast furnaces. These can only remelt scrap not produce from ore.
