Engine suggestions
tigertom - 12/1/10 at 10:46 AM

hi everyone,
am thinkin of doing a engine transplant.currently have a 1.8pinto on twin 45's with cam running at 113bhp.always liked the thought of a bike engine but never got a run in one,or a cec with a sorted engine.theres an r1 engine package £1200 with 143bhp.i dont want to do a transplant for a slight change in performance.i want something that is bodering on wicked, but always lean towards the zetec for reliability.it will go goin into a tiger cat which i'm not sure if it is light enough(636kg complete).any help/advice welcome.i know getting a run in something might help decide but dont want to miss a bargain/package if it comes up.

blakep82 - 12/1/10 at 11:08 AM

i live vauxhalls
either red top or even ecotec. i went ecotec on price, c.d.thomson went red top

Duratec, duratec, duratec.

You can do a budget install for around £1000 - 1500 and that will get you pretty close to 200bhp and superb reliability.

Cat is too heavy for a bike engine anyway.

And you will have to manualy push it backwards as well.

cd.thomson - 12/1/10 at 11:58 AM

hi,

REDTOP.

this is all.

Sebastian - 12/1/10 at 12:13 PM

I also drive a Cat and had in the beginning also a Pinto which i swopped for a ZX9 engine and took that out the same year and mounted a 2.0 Zetec with TB's which is the best thing i ever did with the car.

The Bike engine is for a car with the weight of the cat not the way to go imho you keep shifting and with no reverse it's just not suitable for the public roads.

Turbo Cossy perhaps.

U2U sent re cossy

franky - 12/1/10 at 12:35 PM

plenty of options around, not all ford either!

tigertom - 12/1/10 at 12:40 PM

would a zetec make a big difference.there around 150bhp/135bhp at wheels which is only 20bhp more than i've got.is it worth hassle for the difference.to get more performance is more money taking you into the duratec range, but i thought they were a lot dearer.£1000-£1500 sounds very cheap.is there a list of parts and prices for that conversion.does it include engine and bellhousing to match it to type 9.would really be tempted if i could get 200hp for £1500.

flak monkey - 12/1/10 at 12:48 PM

My duratec cost around £800 to get it to ready to fit in naturally aspirated form.

Engine - £400
Fiesta ST flywheel - £25ish
220mm ford clutch (zetec/cvh) - £30
Bellhousing - £200 (new) or ~£150 second hand
Bike throttle bodies - £100
Sump kit - £75

Everything else you can sort yourself (inlet manifold, alternator brackets etc etc)

If you look on my website here:
http://gtslocost.locostsites.co.uk/duratecinstall.htm

Theres a list of costs. You dont need to upgrade injectors etc if you only run 200bhp.

They are expensive to fit if you run raceline everything (sump, steel flywheel etc etc) but there's really no need.

You'll also need a megasquirt ECU to run it all.

I would go for Vauxhall 2.0 16v Redtop 156bhp standard should be around 180bhp on carbs.Cheapest and easiest way to 200BHP.Also very strong engine plenty of them for sale on Migweb/performance Nova sites and plenty of secondhand tuning goodies too.

blakep82 - 12/1/10 at 01:13 PM

ecotec is a bit cheaper than the red top, same block as the red top, so bell housings for the type 9 box are easy to come by, head tuning parts are not as common as the red top, but are available from QED, and SBD have some.
power potential can be the same as the red top, but it is slightly down on standard power. 137BHP i think it is.

i got mine for £150 a couple of years back.

cd.thomson - 12/1/10 at 01:23 PM

you know you want to

-type 9
-original Vx pressure plate
-ford friction plate
-aftermarket bellhousing, clutch fork and release bearing
-engine

all the bits are available at reasonable costs from at least 4 specific companies and come up on ebay. Don't let anyone tell you that fitting a Vx engine is significantly more complicated than any other transplant!

costs less than the duratec install, you get similar bhp, don't need to worry about emissions. Downside is the duratec is all alloy so saves you quite a few kilos for your extra monies

Having just put a Toyota blacktop 4AGE 20V back in my Striker over Christmas and started it last night. I'm going to recommend one of these but so long as you fit a light flywheel to match the lightened internals (from the factory).

I'd forgotten how quickly it spins up when you blip the throttle and its very unlike most production engines. 4 individual throttles again fitted as standard from Toyota.

Gaz7612 - 12/1/10 at 02:20 PM

How about a 2.2 ecotec engine all alloy and make good power to start with.

Has anyone else done one of these engines in a 7?

A1 - 12/1/10 at 02:52 PM

go mental. turbo hayabusa.

either that or the turbo cossie ideas good

carpmart - 12/1/10 at 03:06 PM

Or a cheaper 8v cossie turbo also known as a pinto turbo!

tigertom - 12/1/10 at 03:10 PM

cossie i hear has heat issues(suggested by tiger).i think duratec is the way forward, its light and exhaust exists the same side as the pinto etc.may wait till next winter though till parts become easier/cheaper to source as the more people do the install.

iank - 12/1/10 at 03:21 PM

Cossie can certainly be made to work without overheating, though it's not the cheapest option by any means. Take a look through hicost 's picture archive and posts. His is tuned up to 470bhp and happily runs around the continent and up/down mountains all day.

The Duratec has the advantage of having the exhaust on the same side as the Pintosaurus, so it may save some bodywork mods/replacement depending on how your current exhaust is routed.

bmw 328..... 325 manifold and an induction kit.... 250bhp....

Dont think your quite reach 250bhp

193 + maybe 20 for the inlet manifold and maybe 10 for a decent filter.

plus its a straight 6 so heavy in such a small car, make sure you up your brakes.

Sebastian - 12/1/10 at 04:45 PM

ha ha a straight six BMW in a Tiger Cat, well good luck not only the brakes should be upgraded but also the whole car

We have a straight six in our Viento and there we had to mod the chassis a bit due to the angle of the engine.

I also looked at the 4 cilinder BMW "318is" engines but also there the angle of the engine is the problem with the chassis of a Tiger.

blakep82 - 12/1/10 at 05:11 PM

my standard 328 made 200bhp on a rolling road in 2000. i got the papers to show. lost quite a few now i suspect.

franky - 12/1/10 at 05:14 PM

250bhp will be cheap to get out of one as they're very restricted by the manifold/airbox.

How much would an n/a duratec cost with that sort of reliable power?

plantman - 12/1/10 at 06:00 PM

obviously i am going to say 200sx 225bhp ish standard 350ish on standard internals
always plenty on fleabay

franky - 12/1/10 at 06:44 PM

great engine in the 200sx. Nice and smooth from low down too. If I wasn't using an m3 lump it'd be a 200sx one.

liam.mccaffrey - 12/1/10 at 06:53 PM

Volvo Redblock turbo Mental Cheap Power
Volvo Whiteblock 5cyl turbo Awesome Sound still pretty cheap. My spare engine cost 150 quid

You're looking at buying a complete running RWD donor for the money you're talking about

issunaz - 12/1/10 at 10:09 PM

Ecotec V6 3.0 ltr, 211 Bhp, 200 lbft torque

Got further than this photo, but not on the road yet.

There is a working one on TB's in Ireland (Ni7evens)
