just been out to start the 7 after being on holiday for a few weeks, it turned over fine to start with but wasnt firing (due to what i thought was me being heavy handed on the throttle cables) so i jumped in to use my foot for a better guaging of pressure on the throttle and all i got was a click. its done it before when i bought it and was at the petrol station trying for 45 mins before it went. the click is coming from this:

On it's way out, dirty connections or loose, not earthed properly or could be starter sticking. The click you hear is the solonoid trying to work or working but starter gone. See if you get a current to the starter when the key is turned, if you do then needs a new starter, if not then the problem is at the relay.

Check you battery. Are you getting a good voltage?

its one of these batteries with a green light in it meaning good, black for dying etc, maybe just needs a good charge. im assuming thats the solenoid i took a piccy of, again still finding my way around it. it only clicks once each time i press the starter, no repeated clicking.

If it only clicks once, i would guess at battery not sending enough charge through to kick the starter into life.

have you got a multimeter? can you check how much is in the battery? alternatively give it a good charge, or jump it off another car.

i suppose not having enough charge would explain why it turned over at first then wouldnt. its got high compression heads on it from a 1300 and when i bought it i was told that the starter had an adaptor to gear it down to enable it to turn over as a standard set up wouldnt work. am i right in thinking its still going to be a little stiffer than normal even with the gearing so would need a good jolt from the battery?

check and clean all your earth points, and then the battery and that little "window" only shows the state of the ONE cell that it is over and is only showing you how good that cell is and not the others so you could have lost one of the other cells and not know untill you put a multimeter accross the terminals

Until you get a meter on it you really aren't going to know anything.

If you can't get out to Halfords or somewhere to buy one, try a jump start from a known-to-be-good battery.

But you really do need that meter, though.

Try hammering the starter motor.

Cause im getting on a bit so i remember these solanoid starters when mine played up i crossed the connections with a screw driver......if its starts the solanoids knackered or dodgy connections

Battery is flat

Put your headlights on then crank, if they go right out, its flat
