recommend me a gear oil please.

haynes says hypoid 90s by duckhams, except i can't find that oil online.

its a sierra (7"?) open diff, from 1.8cvh. 3.92:1.

tried my favourite opieoils.co.uk but cant find the relevant specs listed, or not complete, wondering if the specs have been updated. haynes lists sqm-2c 9002/3 -aa

any help appreciated.

i'm using redline lightweight (not superlightweight), seems to work well and smells gorgeous

Duckhams brand was shut down by BP because they decided to concentrate on the Castrol brand.


You must use a GL5 oil
Hypoid gear oil EP90 to GL5 is specified any quality brand will do Comma, Castrol, Carlube


Unlike normal gears the gears in Hypoid final drives are subject sliding friction need a viscous EP lubricant don't be tempted to run light weigh lubricants the lightest you will get away with is EP80 GL5 or EP75/90 GL5

I know this is a bit left field,but my Merc which has a manual gearbox ,uses autobox fluid.....as standard.....smoothest box ive ever had.

Yes Merc have used ATF for as long as I can remember ie at least since the fintails --- ZF specify ATF. Land-rover/Rover used it for a while until they developed MTF-94 which was developed directly from Dextron II ATF --- basically they left some additives that were not required out the mix.
ATF is the same viscosity as 10w/40 engine oil and some high quality 10w/40 engine oils also meet MTF-94.

Originally ATF were mainly made from Whale oil !

i've heard people use atf in manuals before, but i remember reading somewhere that bgh geartech the type 9 gurus didn't recommend it.
