swap from silvertop zetec to blacktop?
les - 30/7/08 at 03:35 PM

Hi,

After a disastrous trip to the nurburgring,
where my friend smashed the gearbox belhousing on a low kerb, looks like I have to change the gearbox (type 9)
and engine.

on Ebay there seem to be far more blacktop zetecs around.

I currently hava a silvertop, can i just swap everything over if i bought a blacktop? or are things different- manifolds, water pipe locations etc?

any help appreciated- of course i still have to get the car back from belgium!!

Havre a look on
http://www.toyne.org.uk/zetec.html
he did just that and gives a good discription. Generally it's a straight swap but there is a slight issue with the water pump as you cant use the 1.8 and have to use an idler pulley to run off the back of the belt, the sump is slightly different as well.

There are quite a few differences (I had a blacktop), but nothing that is to bad to overcome. The thing is that it will not just be a straight swap.

PS - When I did mine I used the website quoted above.

The water pump idler pulley is easy to do. I used one of the pullets that came with my Focus engine.

Sump will fit of silver top as long as you swap oil pick up as well, manifolds fit, engine mounts fit. You will have to make an idle gear for fan belt as belt goes wrong way around water pump, yust like to say the black top is a lot better engine.

Thanks guys,

I have a tiger shortened sump, and modified oil pick up and baffles, so from what you say, I may be able to swap the whole lot over to a blacktop engine?

At the moment im running the water pump off the back of the belt as I never got round to changing to a 1.8 pump, so I guess ill be using the same setup

Stu,

any chance of a photo of your pully and belt arrangement? i did not use an idler pulley, and have never been happy with mine

Hi

There are some pics in my archive in the 'Zetec' folder.

The pics were taken with the nosecone on so are all from the back. The pulley came with the Focus engine and is a tensioner I think. It has an aluminium body with a pulley mounted to it.

With the aluminium cam belt cover removed from the front of the engine it bolts straight in to one of the existing holes and lines up fine.

I made a crude steel bracket to go to one of the other mounting points on the pulley to give a bit of extra strength.

It seems to be strong enough.

I used it in conjunction with a small Denso alternator mounted under the carbs.

I made up a three leg bracket for theidler pulley. Uses one of the water pump bolts and unused bolt holes on head and block. Welded nuts either side of the flange and added an unused tensioner pulley with a few shims to get the spacing right. Works fine. Rescued attachment pulley2.jpg
