anyone know about Landrover Disco's?!

my dad is looking at getting a 2000-2002 Disco as a second car, a "hack" if you like.

does anyone know much about them who could offer any useful info/things which are particularly expensive and should look out for?

Thanks

Diesel leaks, apparently the fuel pressure regulator is prone to leaking... not expensive, just a pain to fit

he's not fussed, he doesnt pay for fuel so he doesnt care about mpg in the slightest. he also doesnt mind about range as if he is doing a long journey he can use his other car.

At the moment, he has seen a nice 4.0 v8 but originally said he wanted a T5! As long as it "looks nice, with leather", i dont think it matters

I am currently on disco number 3!!! 1 300tdi and 2 series 2's

Great cars had the series 2 v8 which was a peach of a car until the engine died with porus block, not cheap to replace the v8 engine....Common fault on the 4lt thor engine.

Currently got a td5 with uprgrade power chip, egr blanked off and k+n, giving similar performance to the v8 whilst still giving 33mpg.

If you service them well and are prepared to put up with the anti 4x4 crew they are great cars.

You would be suprised by how many trade up for newer discos come new car time..

was going to add, V8's do have a problem with the water jackets going porous and splitting. may be worth thinking of. TD5 is better option in my opinion but nothing does beat the sound and enjoyment of driving the V8's

The rear crossmember can rot out due to mud collecting on it. Its a partial body off job to replace unless you can arc weld by feel.

thats interesting, we assumed the td5 would be dog slow in comparison, but a map and egr mod sound like a good idea.

the chap next door to me has a td5, he was saying it has some kind of gas (like lpg i guess) conversion but i got the impression it mixes with the diesel, rather than running alone as you would with a petrol/lpg conversion?

Got a '96 300tdi auto myself, love it. Replaced the boot floor recently as that's a
common rot point.

That's how diesel+LPG systems have to work, the diesel lights the LPG as there isn't a spark plug to do the job. Called fumigation by some people.

ok so i think he is swaying toward a TD5 at the moment, i have already given him the "remap" talk

He's going to veiw a 2000 TD5 tomorrow with 68k on the clock. Its pretty basic spec but great condition apparently

I second that, I went for a remap and big intercooler. Gave me a 50% power hike to 200 HP. Great on the motorway and even better at the lights!!!

Watch the exhaust header though. They dont like the extra heat and often warp. Fixed mine with a skim.
