Another silvertop zetec sump question.

Evening all,
After searching back to '06 im still at a daze as to what to do with my 2.0 mundano sump.
Will the 1800 escort unit bolt straight up as this seems to be shorter not by much but enough? Or have my one shortened and welded by someone or buy the scholar engines one alotho this is just over £200.
Also a fez unit and a CVH croped up are these easy to mate up with little or no modding?
So what are you people using sucessfully.

Will be going into a MNR RTIB.

Thanks and sorry in advance.

John

Yep festa zetec sump bolts on, direct swop but you also need the pick up pipe and maybe the dip tube.

As you say it only gives you an extra 15mm.

Sierra cvh sump bolts straight on but you need to drill four extra holes, two in the rear bearing cap and two in the oil pump because its not as stiff as the alloy one.

It will also need the pick up pipe aswell as the two spreader plates. Mods, you will needa hole for the dip stick to go through and its not much shorter than the festa / escort alloy sump.

The newest cvh sump you will find will be a 1993 so will have sixteen years of tin worm.

Ive picked up a few good ones and they are complete pain in the arse to take of at the scrap yard.

The gearbox needs to come of to get access to the back two spreader bolts and the engine has to be lifted above the cross member to it out.

To sum up use the Escort/Fiesta or pay up to get yours choped

Fiesta or Escort 1.6 and 1.8 silver top engines.

cvh must be the sierra and i am told the 1.8 only ? Due to work involved I never got a 1.6 to try.

Not for the sierra though !

still no good with out pick up pipe and spreader plates.

With out the spreader plates it will leak like a sive.

For the pully on the escort You will need an 8mm spanner a knife and a crowbar.

Pull the power steering bottle out and undo the four bolts. Then cut the belt of. Yo will need to lever the engine over about 10mm on the engine mounts to get the pulley past the chassis leg.

As you can tell ive took dozens of them of aswell

i like it altho there seems to be a distinct lack of hammers used

Edit: is the depth of the 1800 escort sump shorter or the same as smaller engines i.e. fiesta?

I think the black top sump will fit the silvertop block . They are two piece with the upper part alloy and the lower part steel which would make the bottom a lot easier to mod than the silvertop.

The only ones that fit are the same part ie 1.6 + 1.8 escort and fiesta's fitted with the zetec silver top

Yep the black top one can be done but thats more work than its worth imho

Keep your mondeo one complete as thats the one schollar want in exchange if you feel flush or find the need latter on.

1.8 sump (on the 1.8 engine) fit OK to my MNR with no mods.

The ally Ford sumps do not like chopping and welding, they go soggy and leaky...

If you want to chop one, 1.8 CVH is the easiest with the extra holes as suggested above.

I chopped about 20mm off of a silvertop sump from an escort and then welded a new base made from 6mm alloy sheet to it.If you clean it well and grind back the edges before welding it is possible to Tig it so as it doesnt leak.
When I changed to a black top I shortened the steel bottom section, the hard bit was the pick up pipe on that as it has a double bend that needs to be cut back right against the filter part of it which is very thin. You also need to remove a lot of surplus alloy from the black top sumps upper section .
Paul.
