Spotted, but not on a road..

Couple of nights ago I went out the back for a smoke, and I noticed a light in the sky. Looked like a bright star, only it was going across the sky at some pace. Looked like it could have been a plane, but they have flashing lights and this was constant, like a headlight on something.

It appeared directional too this light, cos it was changine shape as it went past (the light was pointing forward) and vanished about 3/4 the away across the sky.

Yeah it was the night before last (16th? 17th?) about 9-10pm. No effing clue what it could be like I said it was too fast for a plane.. then again there was a meteor shower not long ago, and I heard recently you can see some sattelites at certain times of the day and night..

Anyone else see it? Any other ideas?

Yes, we saw one on the 13th at 22.24hrs.....only the one though

The meteor 'show' apparently peaked on the 12th, but it was cloudy around these parts that night.

Apparently they will be around for the rest of the month.....(Perseid meteor shower)
They will originate from the north east, so if you were looking up at the sky, the 'tail' of it will appear from a north easterly direction.

As you have said, they are fast and 'disappear' into nowhere.....

There was a thread about this last week......hang on while I find it......

Ah.....found it...

What were you smoking?

It could have been a satellite - never seen one myself but someon described it not a lot differently to that.

Or it was that astronaut's toolbox re-entering the atmosphere??

My best guess would be the International Space Station.
I've seen it before myself and it can be very bright in the sky - and it goes fast compared to a plane. The directional part is that it's only going to be refecting sunlight at certain angles dependant on the position of it's solar panels.
As for those who have never seen a satellite, you can see them all the time if you look. All it takes is a clear night, just after dark, without too much light polution and just look up for a few mins. Soon enough you'll see one. They just look like stars, but moving steadily across the sky

It would appear the smoking outside policy is attracting more attention than things in the sky that are going to come down and rule us all!

Yeah I wasn't going for the aliens thing especially as this was the night after hearing on the radio that there was an extraordinary amount of UFO calls in the early 90s (strangely at the time x-files was so popular...)

Sattelite makes sense but it looked a bit close to me, how far up are they?
