RWD Gearbox source for Audi V8 Engine

Hiya,

I'm seriously considering putting a 4.2 Audi V8 in my viento to replace the rover as I fancy something that revs a bit higher and a bit more modern.

The only issue I can really see at the moment is a finding a RWD gearbox as all Audi's are FWD with a transaxle.

Does anyone know of a gearbox that will fit? or almost fit!

Apparently PPC are using an Audi Diesel with a volvo RWD gearbox in a westfield, does anyone know which Volvo gearbox they are using?

Thanks,
Dan

Hi Dan

I'm doing something similar... not got to the gearbox bit, but have asked the question and the general consensus is the Borg-Warner T5 box. There's a company called Tiger in Holland who make a bellhousing for the Ford Type 9 to Audi engine - they reckon that you can adapt one for the T5 (tell them your intentions when ordering though).

I have an Audi RS4 Quattro box in the garage just now - was thinking of adapting, but it's far too bulky and heavy for a Se7en.

The volvo gearbox is the M90 from the 900 series. It needs to come from a diesel as they were especially cast with a different bellhousing (integral) to fit the vag derv volvo used.

The box is huge and not overly special however.

otherwise you're left adapting the usual favourites such as the T5

Another possible candidate is the Toyota W58. Fitted to Supras and the like. Hugely strong and has closer than usual ratios.
Has a seperate bellhousing so lends itself to modification.
Geoff.

Thanks for the gearbox info, it looks like the diesel gearbox is not going to take the power of a ~300BHP 4.2 Audi, or even the 230BHP version either. The engine it was originally mated to was only 110BHP, i doubt they build in *that* much of a tolerance.

Looks like it may be a case of making another gearbox fit - a bit more of a scary prospect!!

Cheers,
D

M90 Box got used on the 960 24v so is easily able to take 200BHP.
