Padlocks

Need a couple of high strength padlocks, to secure gates and garden sheds.

Looking for advice and prices. (around £30 to spend on each padlock.)

You want something big with a shrouded shackle.
Decent make such as Chubb, ERA etc.
I was going to recommend a Chubb 'Battleship' but just seen the current price

Make is a clue as I said. Chubb, ERA, Ingersoll.
How about second hand, on the bay; item no; 170480988065 for instance.
A good new high security padlock will cost you from £50 up to £130+.
Remember a lock isn't there to keep people out, just to let them know that they should try to get in. After all we can't keep them out of bank vaults. all you can do is make your properrty harder to get in than your neighbours.

As above but I would make it hard to get at the lock with grinders ,hammers etc.
Weld a cover over the hasp, the harder you make it to break might just keep the pikey studs away.
Denis.

Where did that go?

I have to agree, the best lock in the world wont keep them out if they really want to be in so it's just making it hard enough for them to go elsewhere. Anything that will require a noisy operation to get past is a good thing.

One padlock will be going on a gate which opens outwards so padlock is on inside.

Other will be on garden sheds.

Looking at the ground anchor type of thing for the gates as well.

And would like some barbed wire but cant find any.

Was once told by a locksmith that a Battleship is a 30 second lock by which he meant he could get it undone inside 30 seconds. All you are doing is buying time when buying a padlock.

all well and good spending £130 on the padlock but to shut a fence or gate seems pointless.. need to ensure that the area round the padlock is strong...

No point in building a 6mm box over the padlock if the rest of the gate is 1/4" Ply board.

Its metal gate, with metal welded over the gap where they join.

Top is metal spikes.

Metal posts 3ft deep in concrete.

Pity the people who fitted it did it on a slope so I need to grind the concrete down to open it properly haha

The bigger the lock, the more someone will want to get in.

Stay discreet and conservative, but strong enough to cause a problem if they try and break it open.

Kindest Regards,
Richard.

The problem is, kit cars ARE noticed, even when you think no-one has seen into your garage/garden etc someone has.

So I just want to make it more difficult for them.

With that in mind, the more solid (expensive) padlocks will stop the odd kid just trying the gate to see if they can get in.

They wont be able to see the padlock till they get over the gate.
