Proof of age letter from Mazda

This is a post offering information rather than requesting it, hopefully someone can benefit from it. For registering a vehicle with an age related plate or to be able to deal with age-related emissions (for example if your donor is pre-cat), the normal approach is to get an official letter from Mazda. I'm following that process now, so I thought I'd post an updated version of it.

The first step I took was to email mmukassistance@mazdaeur.com, asking to contact the homologation manager. A very helpful person called Stuart Stringer replied directly from that department, and offered me two options based on where the car was from;

1. If it was a UK car, he would have all the information required and would be able to send me a letter with proof of registration and engine age. There would be no charge for this.
2. If it was an import, he would need to approach Mazda Corporation in Japan which would take a little longer (14 days). There would also be a fee of £35.

As my car is an import I have to go for the second option, but I was happy to find out that the fee and time required was the same as I've seen mentioned elsewhere. I made the payment by bank transfer and I will hopefully get the letter in a couple of weeks.

I'm glad that the process is still as easy as it has been for others, even though the donor is now 30+ years old they are still able to provide the relevant details.

Thanks for this post, it's on my list of things to do for my RH build so I'll drop them an email right away.

I've just heard back from Mazda, they've had the information from Japan and they're putting the letter together for posting next week. The good news for me is that they've confirmed the engine is the original, so I now have a proof of age as 21st August 1992.

That should hopefully mean I can aim for a 'K' plate, which will be as expected. The emissions tests will require the cat to be in place so I'm glad I kept hold of it.
