CVH Sanity Check

OK i have now got ythe engine out of my donor. i do not want to use all of the sensors on the enine. am i correct in thinking that to run the engine i will just have to use coil / igniton amplifier with current distributer. it is a 1.8 CVH. i am replacing the carb with a pair of side draft dellortos

Not wishing to put a damper on things but I bought a Sierra with a 1.8 CVH and was advised to ditch it.

I bought it on an impulse and didn't really know what I was looking at. Problem was it was a single point fuel injection type with a cat and sensors in various different places. I think it was J or K reg.

Basically I was told to ditch it because

1) Not many companies do tuning parts for the 1.8 and it's different from the 1.6.
2) I may have to fit a cat to meet the emmisions standards for an engine of that age.
3) I didn't fancy the complexity of the wiring for the above.
4) I'd have alot more options with a Pinto

I suppose it depends on the age of the engine but I got shut of the whole car. Bought it for £150 sold for £90....nice!!

Problem was it had no MOT but when I bought it that was not an issue as I only wanted the recon engine. Shame because other than that it wasn't a bad car.I bought a Haynes CVH manual also which I now don't need.

Others may disagree but that's what I was told.

To get mine working I used all of the sensors as at the time I didn't really know what I was doing. It should run with just the crankshaft sensor to trigger the coil but it will not run or accelerate well without the other sensors plugged in (you may need to plug the sensors into the circuit even if they aren't in their right place) if you want to use the standard ecu. Mine has the hybrid ecu (still has a rotor arm)

I used the original ignition with the relevant bits cut out of the Sierra loom to make just an engine loom, using crank pos sensor ,water temp sensor , air temp sensor.

Since fitting bike carbs I have gone over to Megajolt which is really easy to fit as you already have CPS fitted in the right place.

There's lots of bad chat on these engines ,but they are not bad at all , I skimmed 1mm off my head and spent some time on the ports, i've had 5 years of good use from it , only having to change the rings this year ,(i didnt rebuild it when I fitted it).


I assume you know that the 1.6cvh weber /dellorto manifold will not work on these engines as you need to blank the water outlet at the back of the inlet side of the head, althought you could do this with a sandwich plate.

ok

so i have the 1.8 carbed engine. and if i use teh ecu with the original sensors attached it will be fine. what is the best route to remove some of them? do i need an ECU ?

Yes you will need an ecu ,and a coil pack , then you would do away with the rotor arm and cap on the front of the camshaft.

There is an Escort one that people use , it only needs the CPS , but I cant remember what its called.

Esc II ?
