"DVLA backs classic car industry and driving enthusiasts with updated registration policies
DVLA announces new policies for registering repaired, restored and modified vehicles that will come into effect from Tuesday 26 August."
looks like it may be easier to keep original reg
Some sense at last.
I like that they included EV conversions, I can imagine them being very popular as time goes on.
It sounds promising. I wonder what form "notify DVLA of the changes" will take.
"vehicles that have been subject to significant structural modifications will be able to keep their original Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
and registration number, but the registered keeper must notify DVLA of the changes"
So, let's say, you do a roof chop on a car, a common hot rod thing at one time - you notify DVLA, does it then need IVA or not??? They don't
even mention IVA test!

When I converted my Locost to electric the DVLA website suggested I'd just need to inform them and would receive a new V5C. When I contacted them
I was told I'd actually need an inspection (not another IVA, but an inspection visit). The problem was that they wouldn't inspect it till it
was finished, but couldn't tell me while I was doing the conversion what it was they were actually going to inspect, so I had no idea how to
comply with what they were looking for.
I think the aim was to confirm I hadn't modified the original vehicle significantly, which probably works fine with a standard car, but here the
inspector had no idea what the car looked like before the conversion so couldn't really answer the question he was asked to.
DVLA were actually very friendly and responsive, and I guess it's a niche within a niche so not unreasonable that they don't have a full
process for it, but hopefully now things will be a bit clearer!
Oops, posted twice!

Looks very promising especially for my Anglia will keep and eye on the situation and see what the “inform DVLA” really means.

It's here!
On the face of it this is very good news so let's hope that is the case.
Perhaps you can help me please. I cannot find any updates on how to correctly register a vehicle that has been rebodied but retains its original
chassis, and qualifies for the mandatory 8 points under the old system. Perhaps the original form V627/1 still applies.
If anyone can offer the definitive answer I'd very much appreciate hearing from you, thank you.
I get the impression that certain changes or modifications to a chassis are permitted but that isn't clear.

I'm wondering if slight mods to the chassis to enable me to fit my replica GRP body shell onto a triumph herald chassis will be okay without havinto do the full IVA test. Basically, shortening the rear outriggers and chopping off the front chassis bar (on which the bonnet pivots) whilst strengthening with a tube further back (more like the spitfire front end) Thoughts?

That's an interesting watch, he's pretty much said what I did above.
It would appear that for anything you're supplying a complete new chassis etc for, IE a kit build, it's still IVA, this grey area over
monocoque, basically "do what you like, fill in a form & send it in with naff all documentation" sounds waaaay too simple, but remains
to be seen. The business with older vehicles with no reg document being able to be registered with an age related plate, but needing IVA seems a bit
odd, as many older vehicles would have no chance of getting an IVA due to stuff like seat belt mounts, switches/sharp edges, steering column etc
etc
Still clear as mud!

Indeed it is.
I have had a couple of telephone conversations with the chap at Oscar's Garage, not sure what his name is but I don't think it's Oscar. He did say he would try to source a Banham kit car which I believe uses a Metro as a donor so that he could submit it as a test case and see how the DVLA reacts. He is a kit car person through and through and very knowledgeable so it will be interesting to see how he gets on.
