get the head skimmed or can I just put it back as is?
I am in the process of replacing the head gasket on my car. It ran smoothly before that apart from the oily icecream look. Is it really needed to
get the head skimmed or can I just put it back as is?
It does really depend on why and how the gasket went in the first place.
I did a cvh where you could see the gasket had failed and it was fine with out. I did a mondeo that looked fine with out a skim and ended up doing the
job again a few weeks later when it went again this time it was skimmed.
Get it skimmed and do it once. If its flat they will take bugger all of. Cash price around my way is around £30~35.
might be useful to know what engine it is as I don't have my psychic head with me at the mo.

If you have a friendly local guy who can check and skim if required, it may not need skimming.
At least you would know, it may just need the lightest clean up.
Now's the time to find out.
Skim head every time, not worth the hassle for the sake of £30 IMHO
Check it hasnt been done too many or too much before!
Don't you need to strip it down to bare head to get it skimmed? Or can you leave it together?
If it needs stripping (which is what I have done in the past) then that is a pain in the arse with 16 of everything and all the numbering, plus the
cost of valve seals.

Do you have a mirror or a bit of good plate glass? If so just measure it up yourself. Engineers blue and away you go. I would not skim it if it doesn't need it. Bit of a bodge to leave the valves in but horses for courses - lots of swarf to find.
