1.6 Zetec Se Head gasket?
rich201283 - 9/7/12 at 05:53 AM

We have a 1.6 zetec se Ford focus
The car wont start,

1. I have took the injectors out and they are spraying fuel
2. I have got a spark at the spark plugs
3. I even sprayed easy start in the intake to see if it would fire - It wouldnt
4. I did a compression test and 3 cylinders are low - Would this point to the head gasket?

There is no mayo in the water or oil

Not normal for 3 cylinders to go low together unless the engine has been run very over heated. What sort of results are you getting on the compression test? If you are getting a spark then presume the crank sensor is OK, the cam sensor is a common failure point...If an older car and something big has failed might be worth just chucking in a good used engine as they are cheap and plentiful.

We have already replaced the crank position sensor

Cyl1 160ish
2,3,4 around 60ish

We have just about got the head off to take a look

Update - Head is off - Everything appears fine

Would the cam sensor stop it from running?

If you only have 60 psi on 3 cyclinders the cam sensor is the least of your problems. Check it again, everything can't be fine with it being that low.

Im gonna put the head gasket on and timing it up again, Would the timing been out cause this issue?

Also does anyone know where the timing pin hole is?

Unless the cambelt has jumped a few teeth or broken then the answer is NO.

You haven't messed with the timing have you?

How did this all start? I'm sure it didn't just not start one day with those cyclinder pressures. If you look at the crank pulley, to the left on the back of the engine there is a 10mm bolt inline with the crank. Take that out and put the timing pin in there, there are 2 different length crank timing pins so make sure you are at tdc and check the pin touches on the crank. Be very careful with timing these up as the crank pulley is only held on by a taper and you can easily get it wrong. I always use a long screwdriver through no1 spark plug hole to make sure the piston is at tdc. Also make sure you hold the cams in position with the timing bar on ends and slacken the cam pulleys off. Use a couple of mole grips to hold the cams in position as you loosen and tighten the pulley bolts or you could damage the cams. If you don't time the cams aswell as the crank the engine won't run perfectly.
