FOZZIE/CHRIS - CAN THIS BE MADE INTO A STICKY AS IT COMES UP QUITE OFTEN AND I THINK IT WOULD BENEFIT QUITE A FEW PEOPLE...

Cheers,
Steve

[Edited on 15/3/08 by worX]

bob - 15/3/08 at 08:59 PM

Info like this should really be a sticky at the top of the running gear section.

can chris or fozzie make that happen as it would save people a lot of time sifting through the site.

nice work steve

worX - 15/3/08 at 09:03 PM

Sorry - I put it in here, as I thought it was more applicable in the tranmission section!

Could it also be moved and then become a sticky pretty please...

Steve

bob - 15/3/08 at 09:04 PM

hells teeth that was quick

bob - 15/3/08 at 09:07 PM

steve

I think your right, its probably either or, we should really have more info like this stuck at the top, seems a lot of other forums do it and saves the searching.

Fozzie - 15/3/08 at 09:08 PM

Excellent work Steve...

I've 'stickied' it

Fozzie

Nice one but it conflicts with what I asked last week.

That means Ive left a 3.38 sat in the scrapie

Thats a bit like leaving pound notes there

Hellfire - 15/3/08 at 09:21 PM

Steve, the VIN plate ratio codes are incorrect. The 3.62 is U

Phil

worX - 15/3/08 at 09:25 PM

My post was mainly to get it up there as a "sticky" and I just copied the info from Fesycresy post last week, so if someone (a damn sight more!) knowledgeable than me can clarify the details please I will amend the opening post to reflect the correct ratios and codes...
Steve
This is Previous post:
U is a 3.62:1

code list below will help

M=3.14 (7" or 7.5"
A=3.36 (7.5"
V=3.38 (7"
U=3.62 (7"
3=3.64 (7.5"
9=3.91 (7.5"
D=3.92 (7"

Cheers Phil.
I've edited it to suit...
Is the 3.64 3 Ratio correct or should it be a B?

Hope So!

But if not I'll keep checking back to see if anyone else has a more accurate opinion!

3.92 LSD = fitted to the XR4x4i 2.0 Sierra

bjohnson - 25/10/08 at 08:30 PM

Great info thanks.

WIMMERA - 16/11/08 at 06:40 AM

I have been offered a Sierra diff and driveshafts, the vendor tells me the tag on the diff reads
83 BG 4006 AC
4A 377 3D14
Does anybody know the ratio.
Sierras were never sold in Oz so knowledge of codes etc is limited
here.

Cheers
Wimmera

Jason Fletcher - 6/3/09 at 11:37 PM

I think thats a 3.77 ratio. Even though its rarer than even a 3.14 it not a desirable ratio.

Jason

Jason Fletcher - 6/3/09 at 11:40 PM

Just though I'd add that 3.36 ratio diffs can be found in 2.0 auto sierra estates and there are a few around.

Jason

MikeFellows - 3/8/09 at 05:48 PM

Ive a diff from a 1990 2.0 DOHC

stamped on one side with 06625

Thanks

mad4x4 - 28/8/09 at 11:33 AM

I have been offered a diff with the folwing code: 83BG-4033-BA does the BA on the end confirm the ratio code, if so what is the ratio?

Thanks

After looking at so many diffs I believe it is a 3.62 non LSD. The deal never went through as I was offered one lcally, so I didnt get the cance to check.
If you have the diff to hand, just turn the input shaft and count how many turns you have to turn to get the output shafts to complete one rotation.
To check if it is an LSD hold one of the output shafts so it cannot rotate, turn the input shaft, if you can still turn the input shaft freely without the held output shaft moving it is open, if the output shaft cannot be held in place whilse rotating the input shaft it is an LSD (or someone has welded it!)

Hope this helps

Dan

Relph - 5/11/09 at 10:59 PM

Hi mate, the propshaft turns just under 4 times to 1 turn of the wheel so i suspect its a 3.92 and when you have the rear jacked up and turn one wheel the other side wheel turns the same way so i think its an LSD or been welded.
So 3.92 LSD i think, but would be nice to get it confirmed using the code stamped on it.
Cheers

Tommy P - 15/1/10 at 04:29 PM

Just to add a bit more to this thread
I have a sierra diff hanging about in my garage which is a 3.62 I think.
it's code is = 83BG4006RG and 4A3624M07
Is the 83 the year and what does the RG signify

Not that im aware, lots of people assume all dierra diffs are LSD though... just rotate one side of the diff if the other side rotates the opposit direction its an open diff.

nz_climber - 5/2/10 at 11:45 PM

I have just brought a Diff from a 88 sierra with disc brakes, My friend has picked it up

Has the following codes:
88GG JB 392 4A0E04

Its a New Zealand car so this might be why I can't find any information about the ratio.. but guessing from the numbers its a 3.92:1?

Rob E - 26/9/10 at 07:32 AM

So what would be a desirable diff and why ?

ZEN - 26/9/10 at 05:19 PM

It depends on the wheels dimension, transmission ratios and engine RPM you are going to use.
For example for a higih reving BEC application with 13" wheels you should go for a long ratio diff like the 3.14

needforspeed - 27/9/10 at 07:05 PM

hi, im running a 7'' lsd from a 4c4 cosworth whats the lowest ratio available for these?

sebastiaan - 20/10/10 at 07:01 PM

Right, here's what I've found out about the 6,5" diff over the last two weeks for future reference.

Fozzie, if you feel this should not be included, feel free to delete.

The 6,5" diff has a 6,5" diameter crownwheel (duh..) and the same mounting arrangement as a 7"diff. It exclusively uses push in shafts that are not interchangeable with the 7"diff as they have a different number of splines at the diff end (6,5" diff has 23 splines, 7" diff has 26 splines).

The driveshaft bearings and oil seals are not available in a rebuild kit, but have the following partnumbers:

Bearings: SKF K-LM29749
Oil seals (output shafts) 83BG-3K169 A5B (or A58, I'm not sure on that one)

For the oil seals I have used generic 40x55x10mm oil seals. Whilst the diff is not running yet, they fit the casing and driveshafts well, so I don't expect any problems there.

I do not know the part numbers and/or dimensions of the pinion bearings and seals as I've left that well alone.

Oh, and it seems the 6,5" diff is a few (4?) kg lighter then a 7" diff.

A lot of this information came from Matt's website: CLICKY who is also a member on here. Matt, thanks!

Regards,
Sebastiaan

seventhheaven - 2/12/10 at 01:26 PM

Hi,
A friendly man at the local ford dealer let me use his microfiche machine and I've managed to get all the part numbers, FINIS numbers, exploded diagrams etc for Sierra, Granada and Scorpios. I'm putting together everything I've found at www.super7thheaven.co.uk
Hope that helps - It's a work in progress

kensprin - 18/7/11 at 10:06 PM

I'm trying to found out what diff I have. The tag is completely rusted out. Can't make head or tail of the numbers. The number on the bottom casting reads
93bg-4033-ae any ideas. As I turn it it could bd a 3.6

seventhheaven - 19/7/11 at 06:55 AM

You can turn it and count the rotations but the only real way is to remove the rear cover.
The 4033 parts are mostly from Granada's and Scorpios.
If you remove the rear cover there should be some white or yellow painted writting on the crown wheel.
If this is missing it should also be stamped into that wheel as well.
See http://www.super7thheaven.co.uk/Sierra_Rear_Differential. Hope that helps.

chamanne - 10/4/12 at 06:34 AM

Hello guys,

I've just bought a sierra from the 11 june 1990.
WF0BXXGBBBLJ30605

Fitted with a 2.0 DOHC engine

Normally, it's a XR4I.

The question is : is it a limited slip diff ?

With ratio ?

Franck

seventhheaven - 10/4/12 at 07:00 AM

Whether it is limited slip or not, there is only one true way to tell and that is to check the small metal tag on the diff. Ford were strange when it comes to LSD, some had it, yet other identical cars didn't. I have a 2.0DOHC 4wd and it is LSD but that doesn't mean yours will be too. Mines a 3.92 but yours could be 3.62 or 3.92:1.
It begs the question - 'who was on LSD?'
I'm afraid I'm not into Ford numbers enough to decode the VIN number.
Sorry, but I think you've gotta get under that rear end

chamanne - 10/4/12 at 09:44 AM

quote:

I've found it :

88GG JB 392 (so a 3.92:1 ??)
4A 0E08

Who can help me ?
Limited or not ?

Thanks in advance

Franck

seventhheaven - 10/4/12 at 10:11 AM

Unfortunately, you've got one of the diffs with the shorthand code.
But....
You have a 3.92:1 diff. Built May 8th 1990.
The JB suggests it's non LSD
Really, you need a diff with AEA or AA (anything with 2 x 'A' in it) where the JB is.

scott-78 - 27/8/12 at 03:23 PM

i am after a 3.92 LSD and been offered what Im told is one.... it has the following numbers:

ford 83 BG-4210-J E 3.92
89 GG-4k 343-FB

Is this the real deal? Would I be laying down a proud set of '11s' in the road, or foolishly spinning one wheel with an empty wallet??

Some knowledge on this one would be much appreciated guys....

seventhheaven - 27/8/12 at 09:45 PM

Have you tried turning the front flange? The two shafts should turn the same way. Hold onto one of the output flanges to make sure.
Sorry, but the code suggests it's not an LSD.
Under 99.9% of cases, an LSD would have at least two A in the code e.g. 83 BG-4210-AA and not 83 BG-4210-J.

It looks like a bog stock Sierra diff to me.

scott-78 - 27/8/12 at 10:15 PM

my car already has a 3.92 standard diff, the last thing I want is a duplicate :-)
The owner of this is convinced his is an LSD but I didnt think the codes reflected this either. Have messaged instruction to him to test it and get back to me.
Thanks for the reply, always re-assuring when someone says the same as I thought.

CNHSS1 - 28/8/12 at 02:14 PM

if its an aftermarket LSD (Tran-X, quaife, Gripper, ZF etc) the case tag may still show the non-lsd number. whip off back plate and take pics and post up here

scott-78 - 28/8/12 at 05:40 PM

CNHSS1 - 28/8/12 at 07:33 PM

That does look like a std ford oem viscous LSD to me. The fluid cartridge is on the back of the crownwheel

scott-78 - 28/8/12 at 08:40 PM

so it is worth buying then?

westy turbo - 20/12/12 at 03:58 PM

Any way of fitting the 7.5inch 2WD cossie diff (so bigger lobros 108mm) to the current driveshafts as the inner spline diameter on the 108mm lobros is larger than inner spline diameter on the 100mm lobros,e.so i quess either hybrid lobro on 108mm diameter, but smaller inner diameter,as getting a granada fiff is rare over my place..

HI
new on here but i need help can anyone tell me what diff was fitted to the 1992 sierra 2.0 gt with the doch engine i can't find any code on it all i have is the vin number

And would this diff be better than one put into the 1.8 as that is what is fitted to my kit at the min

Thanks for any help

Wildwest - 10/2/14 at 07:44 PM

Hi,

New on here. Could someone help me to find which ratio corresponds to the "85GG 4006 BA" code number of the Sierra differential fitted on my Westy ?

Besides, as I know it's a standard differential, is there a cost-effective solution to turn it in LSD ?

Cheers.

Hope this helps to feed the database.

My tag says;

Cannot read the last 2 values?

Thank you
