First time on track - Oulton Park 7/11

I've finally bitten the bullet and have booked myself onto my first ever track day with my MK...

As excited as i am, im also a bit nervous about it...

I will be having some tuition as i know it will be worth its weight in gold but am wondering if theres anything else i should do, or take, besides checking fluids and pressures before and after.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

Dave

I had my 1st trackday at Cadwell on 1st Sept.

Went with the intention of bringing it home in 1 piece.

It rained on and off

Don't try and break any records go at your own pace, dont get intimidated with others passing you.
Learn the course and build your speed up as the day goes on.

I loved it.

One tip I can give you is learn the course before you go by watching loads of youtube footage, that way you will have some idear of the racing lines.

Enjoy

Not heading out again this year cannot wait for my next Trackday

Before you go check... Oil/fluid levels, nut and bolt check, tyre presures, etc.

Take with you...
Spare oil/fluids and tools.
Spare clothes (seen plenty get caught out by a shower while out and have nothing to change into).
Food and water for you.
HELMET.
DRIVING LICENCE (both parts, no licence=no drive).
Set your alarm!

At Oulton...
Arrive early and get signed on, it can be a big que and only gets worse (don'tforget your LICENCE).
Get the car ready/warmed up then sound checked.
Attend briefing and pay attention.
Try and get out as close to the pace car as posible for the sighting laps; They'll drive the best line so watch and learn (but 10 places back will be all over the place).

When the track opens...
Let the early rush go. It'll be a lot quieter out there 20-30 mins later.
Watch your mirrors
Take it easy at first (you might be green but in Nov' the track def' will be) and treat DRUIDS with extra respect (too early on the gas at exit catches a lot out, so don't go full too hard until after the little hump on the exit).
Keep an eye on your gauges.
Keep your sessions to 20 mins. Do a warm down lap staying off the brakes a bit.

Back in the pits/paddock...
Leave it in gear with the hand brake off or you might cook the brakes.
Check your levels.
Remember to drink.

All day...
ENJOY YOURSELF!

My advice would also watch some videos on youtube of other Sevens going round, for the lines you should take etc, and take care around Clay hill, the Water tower and the exit of Druids!!, the bump in the track catches alot of drivers out.

Plastic bit of your licence, paper bit is now reduntant...

Enjoy yourself, my first one was pure sva shakedown. Found the jetting was wrong and wouldnt rev over 4000 rpm but still managed to catch meself out a few times and pass most of the tintops.

I kept it down to 20 mins or so, back in the pits, check, check, back out keeping an eye on the track and the car.

Eye opening watching the seemingly experienced fast lads bin it!

Great track Oulton

Don't think I would be brave enough to do a track day in Nov in a open top car though!!!!

Will pop along for a look if it lands on one of my days off.

cheers for all the advice chaps.

definetly wont be goin out to set any records, more just enjoying myself a taking it very steady, building up as the day goes along, would be absolutely wounded if the car didnt make it back in one piece.

Very good shout about watching videos of similar cars on track for tips...

Weather could be variable. Whatever, stick around as it could well improve and the track will get quieter latter on. Same event last year and from the angle of the Sun you can see how late in the day it was......

Do not fool yourself, once you get out there it's push push push!!!

Best advice I can give is do the parade then wait an hour before venturing out, people go crazy in the first 60 minutes then it settles down.

Watch your mirrors and remember the rules, you have paid the same as the next man so own your part of the road, do not get intimated by people closing up behind you, take the racing line and increase speed as confidence grows.

Instruction is always beneficial, get this as early as possible after your have found your feet

liking the idea of doing the pace laps and then waiting an hour to let the madness calm down... in that time could walk the circuit perimeter and watch other peoples lines etc

bloody hell, youve got a good memory, i forget what ive done sometime the previous day, normally a work day or after a few bevvies at the weekend.

As you can probably guess i didnt go otherwise this wouldnt be my first time with it on track.

Ended up taking the car off the road for a while and completely rewiring it and doing a few little jobs on the engine like stripping down the carbs as the floats werent shutting off properly and flooding all the time, leaking fuel over the engine casing...

How did you get on?

I'm only just over 20 miles from Oulton and was planning on coming for a look this afternoon, but the weather was awful so I thought better of it

Made it home in one piece so I'm happy.

Surprisingly the sensible head prevailed... The weather was appalling. Feeling the back end trying to let go a few times slowed me down a bit and then one of my mates actually spinning his and ending up less than 1 metre away from the Armco made me not want to go back out for a while as the weather was getting worse, he was running on wet weather tyres while I was on R888's...

Despite the weather I did enjoy the day though, will definitely be getting back on track again, but probably be more like summer next year to hopefully get some better weather to give it a proper go.

Well done. It must have been a baptism of fire in those conditions. I was thinking that if the forecast was good I'd see if there were any places left. Needless to say I didn't bother. I have done that day a couple of times and had nice days.
