Crumbling brake pads
liam.mccaffrey - 19/1/12 at 10:11 AM

My Zr 160 has been sitting for about 6 months, I took it out for a proper drive last week and was alarmed by the horrible noise under braking coupled with much reduced braking performance. I was going to go for a blat but went round the block and straight back to the house.

Took the wheels and calipers off to find the friction material has completely broken down. Crumbling, cracked and generally falling to pieces.

Took the pads out and the friction material has come away from all of the backing plates! Anyone had brake pads break down like this?

yes, but only after significant overheating.

Usually seen it in pads when the calipers have been sticking and got very hot.

Can really only be due to excess heat.

Or really really awfull pads?

Whats the normal usage of the car, clearly at times it gets a bit of a drive, but could over heating be an issue? Tract use?

Age of pads?

i would say it is more to do with it been stood for 6 months, had a Nova rally car a few years back, many times i came to use it after it had been parked for a month or 3 and brakes were crap / crumbling pads, and it was in my garage, so not as if it was getting rained on all the time

The car was used as my daily commute up untill i switched jobs, no track use or exhuberant driving. It happened as a result of th 6 month sitting unused

so have the calipers corroded solid whilst it was off the road?

liam.mccaffrey - 19/1/12 at 12:34 PM

no the calipers are all working fine

Maybe they were some of the cheap Chinese copy pads that were about some time ago? I had something similar happen to my MGB but it had stood for years and the callipers were binding etc..

Personally, can't see it. If it was age then cars would be crashing all over the place, and pads don't have a 'sell by' date.
