Lock up clutch info

Has anyone got drawings / pictures relating to lock up clutches for bike engine install.
Any bike as I'm sure there all pretty much the same.

Thanks in advance

Try Big CC or google it. I have seen pics of these for Busa's on some of the American sites.

Cheers, Nick

Nope... no drawings, but here's a list of my bookmarks on clutches with some comments, and some notes on experiences with my clutch.

Mine is a track only car with a 2005 R1 engine and a flatshifter max/expert. This is the solenoid operated paddle shifter. I was having some problems with missed shifts shifting from 5th to 6th without the clutch, so had been using the clutch on 5th to 6th shifts.

What I found is that this was building too much heat into the clutch. The problem though is the gears being worn (and not shifting properly as a result) rather than a clutch problem.

I am in the process of putting a Rotrex supercharger on my engine, so have been looking for solutions to clutch issues.

Winston Holloway on here has a Rotrex supercharged R1 engine in his car and is using a stock clutch with Barnett springs. I followed his lead in that regard, he's had no problems with his clutch (and he races is car also, with a flatshifter), so I am hoping that my issues are related to the worn gear and that the new gears will solve the problem (should be testing in a couple of weeks), but have also been looking at clutch cooling and lockup clutches....Heat is the enemy of friction so was looking at those mods to reduce heat and improve friction.

Oil Cooling
There's a modification that drag bike guys to which sprays oil on the clutch to keep it cool.

Lockup clutches
Obviously with a lockup clutch there is a significant improvement on pressure.

Was also thinking that a hydraulic conversion might be a good idea with a lockup

I couldnt find a lockup clutch for an R1 on any of the websites but emailed a few suppliers MTC can do one, here is emails back and forth.

In summary, if I still have a problem after Ive fixed the gears and added the blower, Im going to go for a lockup clutch. I have access to CNC machine work in China that is very cheap (they have made all the supercharger brackets for me), so if I do mine I will also be machining the cover plate spacers etc as noted below.

Send me a PM and I'll keep you in the loop.

Hi there,

I'm running a 2005 R1 in a race car. We are currently adding a supercharger and we want to beef up the clutch.

Do you have a lockup clutch available specifically for the R1?

Alternatively, I have access to a machine shop and it would be easy for me to modify the pressure plate, or clutch cover to fit if you can supply one that has the correct diameter etc.

Regards,
Grant

We have a lockup that will bolt onto the 2004-05 R1. Is this car for drag racing? Typically, lockup mechanisms don't respond well to the required down shifting in a road race application. The amount of force generated at high RPM is intense and downshifting could be a problem.
Upshifitng is no problem with an air/electric shifter, though.

You would need to fabricate a cover modification and an extended puller for the clutch that is lengthened by the amount that the cover is modified/spaced out. The cover could either be spaced out by a spacer plate or you could cut the cover and extend a portion of it.

We can supply either a 2-stage lockup (free swinging arms using only weight to adjust clamping force) or a Multistage lockup (arms can be controlled by the use of dynamic springs(included) to change the timing of arm application, along with weight to provide necessary clamping force).

A 2-stage lockup would be about $375.00 and a Multistage would be about $645.00. These prices are in USD and do not include shipping/handling or any applicable duties, tariffs, or fees.

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for the feedback.

The car is used for road racing. The car is so light and I am generally braking so late and downshifting so fast that any compression braking only upsets the balance of the car. For this reason, and also in order to protect the clutch and engine on downshifting I was going to add a slipper clutch, so your comments are in line with my thoughts.

Do you have an experience with a slipper/lockup combination?

Basically, the reason I was thinking slipper and lock-up was so that the clutch stays engaged all the time – to reduce heat.

• I already have a Flatshifter Expert on the car, which has ignition cut on the upshift and throttle blip on the downshift which allows clutchless shifting.

• I am adding a Rotrex supercharger, so the boost will be linear.

• I’m not really sure whether the 2 stage or multistage would be best on the car as I don’t have experience with either,

Based on the above, I would appreciate your advice on whether to use 2 stage or multistage

For what our products are typically used for, everyone tries to eliminate the slipper function of the clutch. So I can’t really say whether a back torque limiting device would/could function or overcome the amount of clamping force generated a lockup mechanism.

The multistage would offer the smoothest application of clamping force of the two types. You can control when the arms apply so that they aren’t as aggressive at lower RPM but can hold the horsepower at high RPM. The 2-stage will have a very aggressive clamping curve, which you can only adjust how much clamping force. You can’t really affect the aggressiveness without sacrificing top end clamping force. I believe that a multistage would be more suitable, though I cannot say how either would work on the down shift. I’m sure it is done by the guys who still street ride their lockup equipped bikes, but I do not know what they do at high RPM to slow down and downshift.

On cooling, I had an overheating problem with an 07/08 R1 when sprinting that caused the clutch to not properly release. Added an oil line into the top of the clutch cover and problem did not come back. Typically first launch/run would be fine but within a few minutes of the run the clutch would start playing up making the car difficult to start.
