E mail q

right o clever people, i have a document on my old computer that i want to send, tried putting it on a pen drive, insert it in new compo, comes up with lots of random letters as a header but cant send it for some reason.
today i fired up my old compo, connected it to interweb and tried to send the document as a mail and an attachment both to my new compo and the person who wants the document....no joy, no message to say it hasnt sent, i also sent a "test" message, that didnt get through either.
this has been annoying me for several months now, any ideas ?.
using both yahoo and g mail btw

First thing I'd try is to compress it using winzip/winrar etc. and then try send that.
The email provider might strip files it thinks are dodgy ? Just guessing here.

gmail seems to do some strange* things when the sent from address is the same as any of the recipients. *(ie it just doesn't send it at all)

Do you log into gmail/yahoo via a web browser eg (internet explorer/chrome/firefox)

or

Do you use an email client? (outlook express/outlook/thunderbird)

If you use a web browser - can you see the emails have been "sent" (in the sent emails folder) when logged in using the new PC you didn't send it from?

Could be they have given you a non working email address ?
(it may take a few days to bounce back and magically be returned to your inbox with a curt note explaining why it wasn't sent)

Welcome to send me a test email to see if you are sending OK

Regards
Rob

That's not been my experience, I send gmail from and to the same address on a fairly frequent basis and it does it for me. Not saying you're wrong though.

I presume it’s more than one line long else you’d just retype

On your old pc copy the text a paste/paste special it into notepad or word and save it.
Put that on your pen drive , open on new pc then copy and paste it To your new working email document?

you could save it to something like dropbox, and just email the link

In your first post you say copying it to a pen drive and then reading it on your new computer does not work.

Can you open the file on your old computer at all?

If not, I would say the file is corrupt and needs some fixing.
If you can open it up on the old computer, what programme is it using?
You could try doing a 'save as' and save it as a text file or at least a file type that you have a programme that can read it on your new computer.

I'm not sure if you can open it and read it on your old computer - if you can then do the following:
1/ Open the file in the program that allows you to read it.
2/ In that program select File/ Save as and save it as a Text File with a new name. or -
3/ Choose print/ print as PDF (if your computer allows it) or -
4/ Choose print/ print as a text file.
5/ Try transferring the new file on a thumb drive or via Dropbox or emailing it.

opened it,"save as" gives following options...word document/xml docu/single file web page/web page/web page, filtered/docu template, no mention of pdf, sounds like tea break time

stuck it on a stick, comes up as 1.1 meg and in wps format, a format my new compo cant cope with

wps is an old microsoft WORKS format
and as is all too often the case, they just gave up any support for it.
as you can open it on your old machine, you will need to save it from that, probably word format is best, though xml is good too

https://online2pdf.com/convert-wps-to-pdf

(have just tried this one myself - no need to enter an email address for it to spam and no viruses or spyware came in with it - so seems pretty safe)

Then try emailing the pdf?
